Stolen Goods

I thought this weekend was going to be cool. I was looking forward to having a nice relaxing weekend.

But I get back on Friday night after work around 6ish to find the house burgled and all my computer equipment, including 2 computers, xbox etc stolen.....

Now I'm going through a lot of emotions and I feel a big gap..I went out on the tear Friday, Saturday and Sunday just to be away from the house but it always sinked backed in that we were violated.

My mates who I live with feel bad to cos none of their stuff was taken...but its the whole intrusion thing.

Now I have my health and a stable living and at the end of the day they are only items that can be replaced.

But still, my attitude to criminals etc has changed drastically and I look on that element of society in a bad bad way..

How can they do this to people/familys?

How has anyone else reacted to this kind of thing?

    How did you handle it?

I feel better now thats off my chest. There was insurance...but the clauses in the policy might not allow me to claim anything..but again its only stuff at the end of the day.......

So What? Its your stuff, you know how much it cost to buy all that and some junkie **** is going to sell it all for a couple of fixes.

I comend you attitude but dont feel sorry for these gits, the justice system does that already

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Jokah

I don't feel sorry for those people....and I agree with Ferdi...hopefully it will come back to haunt them...

All I can do is accept it now...find some other way to fill the void...

Sorry to hear that, I know how you feel. 'It's only stuff' is the best attitude you can take, all right. I know I first felt like doing physical damage to the thief, but there's no point harbouring a pointless resentment that will only do you harm. Good luck with the insurance!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Jokah

    Exactly,

I mean at the end of the day you want to treat the thief like the cast of Resevoir Dogs would treat someone.....

But god willing something will happen to the scum....A quote from good aul Samuel L....

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."

Personally i plant about 4kg's of C4 inside everything i own with a remote detonator so if i ever get broken into justice is only a flick of a switch away** :D:D:D

**I'm really only messing, but it would be sweet huh?

But dude, its way out of line (the stealing that is), just go about your business and try to let it go. Get a new PC and secure your house a bit better maybe. The feeling will die down given time and everything will normalise again.

I will get a new PC in time.....something to look forward to I suppose in the future...

The emotions will probably die down now within a couple of days.....Still though its ever playing on my mind.....

I think I will buy a plant to fill the void that is now left..

I just hope it wont happen to others.....a futile assumption but there is always hope at the end of the day..

was there personal stuff nicked aswell or "just" expensive equipment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Jokah

    Well,

If they go onto the harddrives who knows what they will find....thats something I really don't want to think about...

Apart from being in my house and violating my mates stuff and my stuff, they could be able to access anything on the harddrives if they are intelligent enough....

Personal phone numbers, a ton of digital pics from parties etc...CV documents, applications, thankfully no personal emails but they might find out things about my immediate families and friends...so the violation as far as I am concerned is ongoing...

Lets hope they just dump the harddrives and sell on the shells...or if they try to sell them on, leaving the information stored there, the buyer might pick up on it......again so many situations going on in my head......

Something I would not wish on anyone..and I feel disgusted that it could happen to someone else again at any time and I feel sorry for those who have been victims in the past...

These people have no heart or care.....at all....

If it's any consolation, they would likely want to wipe your personal stuff before selling on - otherwise it might look suspicious. This presumes a level of technical competence that they may well not have however.

If you had any record of credit card details, etc, on the computer, it would be wise to change cards. I actually do myself, I scan in all my correspondence (statements etc) and have letters that quote my card no - I think I'll look at encrypting 'My Documents' now that I think of it!

If you lived in the US I would scream 'identity theft' but I don't think that's a big problem here (I am willing to be corrected).

"If you lived in the US I would scream 'identity theft' but I don't think that's a big problem here (I am willing to be corrected)."

I work to combat a lot of nefarious things that go on in the whole "white collar crime" sector so I know how important it is to keep identities safe....

They also stole my computer carry case which had some letters etc. For the life of me I cannot remember what those letters were but nothing that will allow them gain access to my accounts.

One of the first things I did do was contact the relevant companies and I added extra security onto each account, i.e. credit card, bank, phone..etc....I check my details every day anyway from work so anything out of the ordinary I know what to do if something is out of the ordinary.....

Lets hope they are dumb enough to make a mistake, now or in future days, months, years so they dont inflict this kind of thing on anyone else......

But I hope you are right blorg...

Again though, who knows what they will see before they wipe the drives or dump them?

I'm not a doctor, but that sounds like a classical case of stress (you have that adrenilin "fight or flight" reaction, but can't direct it anywhere). Go find some form of exercise and work of the adrenilin. Check if your local gym has a punch bag (called Anto ;)).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Jokah

Funny enough I am playing a contact sport tonight....it does ease the pain....

And yes I agree it is stress. I've requested annual leave soon to "de dublinise" cos im sick of seeing scumbags everywhere I go...Or maybe I am noticing them more because of what happened......

Actually here is a noodle bender......how do I know it was knackers? Could it have been someone else higher up in the society class....?

Well I suppose anyone who does this kind of thing is a knacker regardless of social statuture....

Thank you all for your kind comments so far....the slogan is right..

    "It's good to talk".:p

I admire your attitude towards what happened, before and after the event. You had insurance (god knows why they may not give you compensation), you contacted all relavent parties that may be affected and you are taking a logical mindset in dealing with it emotionally.

I wouldn't worry too much about the personal information etc being used in any way or even viewed as such. The PC will most likely be sold for a tenner to someone that can wipe the drives clean. They may take a look at what you have in there but it's doubtful that they would actually do anything with it, they want to clean it and sell it on as fast as possible. Why rummage around someone elses emails when they can get money for the thing.

At the end of the day all you can do is learn from it, everything that happens to you can be a learning experience and this is a particularly taxing one. As for the karma reference - I totally agree although it's annoying to think that you may not get to enjoy their karmic reply. But they will get their reward - don't worry. And you will be rewarded in other ways.

Good luck with the plant, may I suggest an edible one.

    XPThink,

I am concerned about your comment!; Quote: " There was insurance...but the clauses in the policy might not allow me to claim anything.. end quote.

Believe me I can appreciate that you have suffered a shock/trauma, but I must ask if you had insurance or not ?..

If you had, do not let some damned loss assessor from an insurance company rob you as well. Its very vague, but if you had insurance and the premiums were paid up to date. Then claim immediately for everything you can. Did you report this burglary to the Police, have they taken an inventory of what was stolen.

Act now, or get a Citizens Information Centre to act for you, if you feel you can not handle the hassle, just now. If you leave it the insurance company will try and not pay out anything. So do you want to get "robbed" twice ?.. I hope not.

Time for action is now. You can do it.

I may sound unsympathetic, but a long time ago in London. I returned home early, and walked in on a burgler who made it clear my life was in danger, and his eyes did not lie, he was high on something. So, I stepped aside and he got away, but I am still mad to this very day. It never leaves, that feeling of invasion. Even though my early arrival stopped him stealing anything, he had stolen my privacy.

Yeah i know how u feel. We we're almost burgeled once, but my dad woke up and they got scared off and didn't get anything. But i felt exactly the same as u do, about feeling so violated that someone would intrude on my place. Although on a plus its made me more vigilant and and now i nevr forget to close any windows! people who steal really r the scum of the earth!

Thanks again for your comments guys.

Paddy20 I believe the insurance is in place. Some things were insured (the main items) others were not insured (small external devices)..Oh don't worry I wont let the insurance company screw me.

The police are fully aware of the situation and were made away 5 minutes after I figured out the items were stolen. They reacted very quickly and I have provided them with all the information.

All I can do is wait......but as far as I am concerned the items are gone and will never come back.

The main theme running through this seems to be the invasion of privacy and the violation of personal space...do they not realise that what they do affects someone for sometime after the actual crime?

"I will strike down with furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengence upon thee"....

This happened me once at work, I found two guys in the basement. I legged it, but then realised I (legitimately) had a hammer in my hand. They got the flock out of there.

Well when you read sad stories like that you realize, damn I don't have any insurance!
I don't need one for the house, it's the landlord problem but for the gear (laptops, digital camera, DVDs,...)!

Your Bank should have a simple cheap basic "Personal goods" insurance package available, or if you rent an - unfurnished home - then it is probably a full "Contents" policy that you need .

Either should be straightforward and cheap, but having a word about your particular circumstances, with a Citizens Information Centre, would be worth doing, or look up the following website for information:- www.oasis.gov.ie

I know the feeling dude - had our flat broken into twice. First time they had a good ole rummage and made off with all the small valuable stuff - consoles, laptop, car stereo gear - as well as packs and a car to carry it all in. The feeling of being violated was just downright nasty... though plenty of friends around helped...

Second time was almost a year later. The neighbours spotted something suspect going on and gave chase but the slimy buggers had a car waiting just over the back fence.... however since the burglary the previous year we'd been pretty fastidious about keeping our rooms locked when we were away. They'd had a good go at getting into our rooms, causing lots of damage to the locks & surrounding walls but had been denied and consequently got away with maybe $30 worth of stuff... the feeling after that was much different... sortof an angry jubilation that they'd tried & failed and had then been chased off the property...

You're right though, it is only stuff but its bloody inconvenient...

    I must say....

Word to the wise....We all should have insurance...

But also if you have not done this already......something I learned a long time ago..

Write down all serial numbers/licence numbers that are on your equipment......The Gardai said that so many people do not do this.....

Thanks again for all your comments....I feel better now that a week has passed since the actual thing.....

We found out that small simple things were taken also from my mates room and he to felt the way I felt last week.....this was only found out last night of course.

Hope though, there was a robbery in the same area and a car reg number was taken down.....who knows.....
