i have an old pentium 133 with 16 mb of ram and i was wondering if it would run freebsb + xfree86 with a very basic windows manager
it can run windows 3.1 fine but would this be too much for it?

AFAIK something like TWM will need about 32Mb to be any way responsive - you don't want the machine to be swapping in and out all the time.

Have to agree, even with 32 Mb running X can be quite sluggish.

However here's a useful website for running linux on old PC's

    No problem!
Did you want to run any applications too :-)

Seriously, take a look at Vector linux.
I know you want to run freebsd, but take
your list of reasonable software from vector.
They aim at running on 16M of RAM.
(Pity the reviews of it put it on machines with 128M RAM
    on the b.. graphics card.)

There are some really tiny window managers,
xfce is a good tradeoff in size with a huge feature set.

Smallest I've seen is at http://ratpoison.sourceforge.net/
It gave me hours extra battery life on my laptop because
it allowed me to stop swapping completely.
    Might suit you.
