    Hey all,

I'm looking for peoples recommendations/opinions on what they believe to be the best book ever written about operating systems, not necessarily about *ix, just on general operating system concepts. I'm looking to buy a well written and very comprehensive book on operating systems, and I thought where better to ask than the computer science forum, but since we don't have one of them I thought where second better to ask than the Operating Systems forum, but since.... you get the point, this is where I eventually posted.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

    Baz_

maybe try "modern operating systems" by Andrew Tanenbaum. havent read it but its meant to be good. one edition i saw had examples from windows and *nix OSes. could be worth a look....

I've heard Tannenbaum is very good too. Think I read one of his on networks at some stage and it was good for what it was.

Using this one at the moment Operating System Concepts. Don't let the XP version thing on it put you off, I reckon that's just there to get morons to buy it. Explains stuff fairly clearly.

I found Solaris Internals to be of some use previously. It's specific to solaris but gives a good grounding in *nix.

And this one has a good reputation - Operating Systems

Tannenbaum's is a good place to start, though really, the definitive one is Design of the 4.4BSD Operating system by McKusick. I learnt a lot from that. If the fact that it mostly focusses on the VAX implementation doesn't put you off, you should go off and buy it now.
