To be relayed after christsmas, this will be the new mainline to the west of Ireland. Mulligar will be transformed into a major rail hub with a huge increase in the number trains running through it.

    Current rumour from the inside.

is this line single or double tracked?

Single track, although the bedding is for double. Work has already been carried out at a number of crossings and stocks are being built up along the route

The CTC singnaling cables are already in place. ESAT ran them along the route about +6 years ago.

There is also a huge sissors-crossing being assembled at North Wall and the story is - it is for the junctionat Phisborough and with the relay of the Midland Line...

Irish Rail may have played an ace up their sleeve here..

What are they going to do at Athlone? The line from Mullingar joins after the station, trains would have to reverse to get into Athlone station.
It is very good news, more services are needed to the west.

There is plans for a large modern Park n' Ride station on the Western side of Athlone just before the Mayo lines divert. Athlone will have two stations again. Park n Ride is a good idea for Midland towns. Trains going to Mayo and Galway will call at the new Park n' Ride station. Athlone will eventally have it's own railcar services at peak times and not just be on the Galway trains. The Athlone trains would stop at both stations in each direction.

QUEUE - some clueless gob****e ranting about the stations too close together while missing the point completly. Future Irish Rail manager material...

Not necessarily more services for the West, merely more for Mulligar and less for Port Laoise (so Mary O'Rourke can win here seat back?).

Shouldn't make much difference to Portlaoise. However, probably not good news for Tullamore unless a shuttle service between Portarlington and Athlone is also introduced.

Overall its good. Linking Galway, Athlone & Mullingar with each other & with Dublin is a good thing. It will also mean a service to Connolly rather than Heuston, effectively cutting 20-odd minutes off the trip to the centre of Dublin. However it should cause great fun on the concourse at Connolly during peak times
