I'm buying a zoom lens for my SLR and was browsing around for a sigma (I hear they're good).

Sigma 100-300mm Telephoto Zoom: this was the first one I discovered but then I found Sigma 70-300mm APO Macro Zoom. Its for sports photography mainly so which whould suit my needs more?

What are the respective aperture ranges for the lenses you mention?

If you are buying the lens primarily for sports photography, go for the faster (aperture) lens.

Isn't the Macro Zoom for extreme close-up photography - insects/flowers etc ? I thought all Macro lenses were for close-up work ?

I'd go for the 100-300mm lens.

you can get some nifty zoom lenses that can do macro. I've played with an old one, which when you are a maximum zoom, you can either focus normally, or you can turn the focus ring in the opposite direction and it turns into a macro, kinda neat!
