release date for nokia 6600?

Read in a carphone warehouse brochure recently that the 6600 is due to be released in "October 2003". Taking this with a pinch of salt, as I always do with carphone warehouse, I rang vodafone to check with them. They have no idea. "Keep an eye on your local vodafone store" was their advice.

Does anybody know if this phone will actually be arriving in shops this month? I'd love to upgrade to it and get rid of my dieing 6310i

I wanna get one of these bad boys too. Just looks like a savage phone and should be a nice replacement for my now bruised 7650.

had a quick go on one last earlier in the month (although the SW wasn't running too smoothly - but it was a demo model) - a big improvement over the 7650 hardware wise and also based on a more recent release from Symbian - it was much wider than i though it was going to be though - there was no firm date then - will ask here tomorrow if I can track down some Nokia heads - even when Noika start shipping (and they haven't publically announced a firm release date) a network release here is usually + x weeks / months after it begins shipping...

Cheers DubWireless. I guess this is just another case of an overly optimistic carphone warehouse.

ok - i had a chance to do some online reading last night (after WiFi was made available here) and The Feature reports is to go onsale with an operator in Spain (Movistar)... interesting to see it go straight to network (the likes of expansys.com and others aren't lsiting as yet...)

Nokia had a keynote session at CTIA this morning but focused on content and the N-Gage (and couldn't get the online demo to work!) - no news on the 6600 :( there is a exhibition preview tonight so will see if anyone on the Nokia stand has any more info

looks like it's getting closer though - a launch on our networks could still be some way off - unless fidelis or emmo know different?

Following a call to the carphone warehouse yesterday a less than enthusiastic chap told me it would be here in October; within the next 2 weeks in other words. As theres no word from Vodafone on the launch yet I'm led to presume that carphone warehouse will be offering a sim free version. Time will tell I suppose...

SIM free shouldn't be long - i'd keep an eye on the likes of expansys.com or mphone.co.uk for actual availability (expansys normally get things very quck after a item goes on general release) - be wary for the usual practise of early adopter pricing they use - second or third stock shipments are usually are a less "crazy" price... if you are looking for a SIM free model...

Would ya recommend the phone as a replacemtnt for the 7650 DubWireless? Well from what you have seen so far.

i hear from my sources that they will be coming into the open market by the end of next week at allbeit at very high prices,

Alot of demand for them , lots or preorders out there , some people will pay anything to be the 1st ,ect

ok - tracked some Nokia heads down at last - no one had any ship date to confirm - in fact they were all surprised when I mentioned the article on The Feature and said it was news to them that it was shipping - but they did say it should be "in the near future" - sorry for nothing more definate

fyi - the two 6600 handsets they had here were running software from September on them

as a replacement for the 7650 - for someone who likes Noika sure it would be a nice option - i mentioned i though it was wider then i had thoght it was going to be (from the photos) - but stacking a 7650 and 6600 on top of eachother they are about the same width (the 6600 is shorter though) - so if you are going from one to the other then it may not matter too much to you - although i'd have liked if it had been a bit more svelt

unless you are a staunch Nokia fan - you might want to check out that Sendo model - it was v. nice - the guy from Sendo had it here although it wasn't being passed around - take a look at the specs. from the post about it... will be good to read some more info/reviews when the handsets starts doing the rounds

    thanks for the info Brian.

As a change of pace... I might just go completely mad and wait for a P900. I'm so bad at making decisions... or am I?

Thinking of waiting for P900 to upgrade form the 6310i as well........looks very nice

Hey Dub, the P900 is rather nice, how much do u expect it to cost with a connection from someone? I expect it has bluetooth....I was looking at it last night when u posted and have forgotten

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,027 ✭✭✭flywheel

yeah - if you want a more PDA centric smartphone then the P900 would be an excellent choice (compared to the more phone centric 6600) - be prepared to part with a wad of euros though...

a P900 as an upgrade from a 6310i - that's going to be a huge change - unless you are already using the 6310i with a PDA? - then you can combine most of both in the P900 (depending on the PDA used previously) - but with any converged device there are usually going to be trade-offs...

i left the P800 behind on this trip as I needed the features of a dedicated PDA (iPAQ) and hooked it up the phone over Bluetooth when any comms were needed...

    hth,

not sure about operator pricing - that's a hard one to guess - expansys are quoting around Eur 840 (inc. vat / ex. shipping) for their first supply...

it has Bluetooth, Infrared and via the supplied cradle to USB are the other local connection methods

it is a lovely device and SE have done a lot of work from enancing the hardware (from the P800) to widening the development platforms to try and generate more apps to be built/ported and also offering better developer support

no specific release date mentioned just 'aiming before the end of the year' - it didn't look huge (in a 7650 way) - they didn't hand it around for a 'feel' but it looked around a similar size to an SPV E100 - can't comment on depth / weight though...

alas the ordeal of which phone to get is finally over. Hummed and hawed for a while on the nokia vs. Sony Ericsson but finally snapped and just bought a P900 on ebay for a smidgin over €600. Too much money for a phone I know but I am and always will be a slave to the gadget makers :D

expansys had been saying they expected the handset a few days for a few months now (their estimate date appears to be provided by a bad fortune teller!) They even notified customers they were shipping the 6600 back in July - i tend to order my handsets from www.mphone.co.uk and use expansys.com for PDAs and the like...

mphone have an import version in-stock and uk version on pre-order: details here...

re: buying a handset SIM free off the street in Ireland - please check online first - you can sometimes save a large wad of cash...

still works out about 580euro for the inport plus will need to get an adapter for it

was in the nokia store on dawson st yesterday (the joys of working in D2)
and they said that it will be out in the next 4 weeks

they are waiting on O2 to test it

if that is the case we are not going to see this phone in a shop over here till after christmas look how long it took them to test the 3650

well finally got my hands on it today ,

its nice , good screen , kinda wide , first opinion was that it is a 7650 in disguise, menus are the exact same layout

still rather my t610 though!! ;-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,027 ✭✭✭flywheel

    @babyhack

yeah - wasn't trying to make out it was cheaper - thought you were looking for somewhere online that was selling it so just providing the links :)

that's what import models are - non UK models - so you pay through the nose and usually need an adapter - better off waiting for the UK model to appear - cheaper price and the right adapter...

you may well see it in a shop over here SIM free before christmas - but if you are looking for it 'on network' by then that would be a surprise - going on past launches you'll also pay far more off the street in Dublin for such a new model SIM free compared to sites like that of mphone.co.uk or expansys.com :(

yeah i really would have warmed to it more if it has been a bit thinner, for anyone used to the 7650/3650 the screen will jump out at you alright, with the big increase in colour depth the screen was also very bright

    6600._ctia03_devices.ie.jpg

even though it's based on a newer version of the Symbian OS it keeps the Series 60 look and feel - so anyone upgrading from a 7650/3650 will feel right at home with the interface - it's the layer underneath that has seen the changes

let us know how you find the battery life Smithers - see how much a drain that screen is...
