Zoom X4 dsl modem/router question

I just got IOLBB installed. The modem they were sending me didnt arrive so i picked up the zoom x4 dsl modem router. I have 3 pcs in the house so i was going to pick up something like it anyway.

Plugged the thing into the wall and the hub. I can communicate with it (the http setup) and everything seems fine and dandy. I have the iol settings in the config and the modem itself can connect to the internet. The logs show it is connecting (getting DNS and time server, etc).

However, no matter what i have tried, i just cannot get any of the computers to connect to the internet through it. In command prompt, pinging something gives me an IP address before telling me 'destination host unreachable'. Im obviously getting some DNS through the modem but thats all.

The 3 comps are running xp sp1. The modem is hooked up to the wall, into a hub, the 3 comps are into the hub and the network works.

The 3 comps and the router are all on the 169.254.0.*** range. In network connections i am telling the comps to use the modem as the default gateway.

Its driving me nuts, cant get it working. Any ideas? Or is the modem bust?

as in the other thread i started a few minutes ago ....
iol have disabled all pings on their service

i imagine it's something to do with DOS attacks but i honestly don't know

i'd say that's why you can't ping anything though!

Can't help you with the problem unfortunately - i'm thinking of getting IOL today so i'll be watching these threads carfeully :)

    err...

its not pings that have me worried. Its the fact that i cant connect to the internet. Pings are just one of the ways i was testing.

Also wondering whether IOL assign static or dynamic ip addresses?

as far as i know it's dynamic

and i said that about the pings cause thats the way you said you were testing it :)

i'd try to tracert your ip but it'd be useless as you probably don't know it (if you can't get an outside connection) and i think it's stopped by iol anyway

    try this ...

can you connect the modem to one of your pc's on the network

setup that computer to work on the internet fine ....
then set the others to use THAT pc as the gateway machine

that way you'll know if it's the modem that's gone kaputt or if it's a networking issue ...

or if it's just not going to work for you :)

In case anyone is vaguely interested (or if in six months time someone is doing a search for zoom x4 :D ), i got my zoom working.

It turned out that it was the NAT settings. NAT will not work for more than one computer - its a dynamic IP thing. However, switching the modem/router to NAPT sorted everything out.

I know you've got it worked out, but your explanation doesn't make much sense - everyone else is using NAT devices that will happily support 254 devices. Most other vendors don't really differentiate between NAT and NATP, though I suppose if the Zoom does differentiate between them, then I would expect NATP to be the default setting.

My first thought though was that your problem might have more to do with the IP address range your device is/was using - according to RFC 3330 the 169.254.0.0/16 block is the "link local" block. It is allocated for communication between hosts on a single link. Hosts obtain these addresses by auto-configuration, such as when a DHCP server may not be found. Your Zoom should have been providing a DHCP service - it sounds like your PCs weren't getting a DHCP response, so they selected unused addresses in that block. Now that you've switched to NATP, are you still getting 169.254.0.0/16 addresses?
