ok this is the type team we used for the most part of the qualifiers and we got nowhere

    Given

    ----Finnan/carr
    Breen
    Cunningham
    O`shea/harte

    ---Mcaterr/Carsley
    Holland
    healy/kinsella
    Kilbane

    Keane
    Duff

If we want to stand some chance of reaching the WC2006 finals we should definatley change our team after all we will probably be the third seed.I think our team should look something like this.

    Given

    ---Carr
    Cunningham----O`brien
    O`shea

    ---Miller
    Carsely
    Healy/holland
    Duff

    Keane
    Morrisson

Or perhaps a more versatile system

    Given

    ---Carr
    Cunningham
    O`brien
    O`shea

    Carsley/Kinsella
    Holland
    Healy

    Miller
    Duff

    Keane

    It should be

    Keane

    Keane
    Keane
    Keane
    O`shea

    Keane
    Keane
    Keane
    Keane

    Keane
    Duff

Every other Irish team ever was crap.

    [Edit] Ok, Ok, sorry......[/edit]

I'd like to see the inclusion of some of the youth and perhaps Kerr cansculpt the way the team plays.

    Given

    ----Carr
    Cunningham
    O'Shea
    Finnan

    ----S. Reid
    McPhail
    Miller
    Duff

    Keane
    Morrison

Would be a great one for the future.

G : Kiely <- please come back! Given is overrated!

    RB : Carr

    CB : Breen

    CB : Cunningham

    LB : O'Shea
(The back 4 is actually the only part of the team which doesn't seem to need tinkering when all four are available)

RW : ANYONE! as long as they are playing regularly as a RW, as opposed to just sticking the spare man in this position as seems to be Kerrs want. In fact I'd even have Finnan or Gary Kelly back again in this position ahead of a central midfielder.

CM : Carsley <- rarely given a shot here, could perhaps do a job here as a defensive midfielder

CM : T.B.H. I'm stumped with this position. We need a leader here and Hollands NOT the man. I don't think we actually have anyone who can do the necessary, so I'd be willing to try anyone and everyone during the friendlies to see who can fit in best.

LW : Duff <- his best position, and as much as I'm a fan of Kilbanes effort he's denying us of our best player in his best position

    CF: Keane

CF: Connolly <- If I've only got two choices then I'd rather have a willing div1 player who scores goals for fun than a Premiership showboating benchwarmer who's more talk than walk (Morrison)

Whatever way you look at it our midfield is a mess and needs a fresh injection of SOMETHING and soon or we can kiss WC2006 goodbye.

LOL, no he is not. If you saw him playing yesterday for Newcastle it might change your opinion of him. Without him and they would have lost the match. If there one player in the Irish squad that is overrated it is O'Shea. He may be good but he is no where near as good as Finnan on the left or Cunningham at centre half.

Given was a god against Boro.

Robson has heaped praise on him more than once the past year.

    Healy is also overrated.

Just about to say that. Holland and Kinsella should never put on the Irish jersey again aswell.

    My 2006 team:

    GK: Given
LB: Finnan (he's playing poorly at the moment though IMO)
    RB: Carr
    CB: O'Shea
    CB O'Brien
    LM: Duff
    RM: Reid
    CM: Miller
CM: Delap/Healy (whoever is on form)
    ST: Keane
ST: Connolly/Morrison (again whoever is on form)

I think that Connolly could do well for Ireland if he gets more games under his belt. He'll be a Premiership player next year too IMO, so he'll be playing at a higher level hopefully.

I think we should try the following.

    Given

    Carr Cunningham Breen Finnan

    S.Reid Healy MacPhail Miller Duff

    Keane

At the moment we don't have a decent front man to play alongside Keane. We have to play a passing/possession game. i think this will be better achieved if we play a 4-5-1 formation.
This is what we did in USA 94 when Quinn was injured and Cascarino off form.
MacPhail looks like a player who can provide some creativity. Healy and Miller can provide the bite. Reid and Duff the width and speed.
Miller can also provide us with a goal threat from deep.
This formation can become a 4-3-3 with Duff and Reid pushing on.

    What do you think?

Have to agree, its a sin not to have O'Shea in there. One of the hottest young talents in the premiership and what do we do, drop him.. Only in Ireland

    nicely said jesus..

    my team would be:

    GK: Given

    RB: Carr
    CB: O'Shea
CB: O'Brien/Cunningham (NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER GARY BREEN)
    LB: Finnan

    RM: Reid
    CM: Carsley
    CM: Healy/Mc Phail
LM: Duff (Should Always Play Here)

    CF: Keane
    CF: Morrison/Connolly

Starting off they'll prob get a few hidings, but when they come out the other side they'll be a savage team...

Why are so many people going for Carsley. He's absolute muck of the not-as-skillful-as-Kilbane mode

Connolly is a very good div1 player but not good enough at international/premiership level. I like the lad (works hard, tries his best) but he's had more than enough chances at this stage and just can't cut it. Obviously he'll still be in the squads as we aren't exactly blessed with strikers at the moment (or ever!!)

I like the idea. Probably wouldn't work in practice but worth a shot anyway. Although why you've left O'Shea out I'm not sure

Have to agree with this, Carsley gets 10/10 for effort but 1/10 for ability.

Miller, both Reids, Healey and McPhail should be used as much as possible between now and the first WC qualifier to give them some much needed international experience. It'd give Kerr an idea of their abilities and if they are good enough at international level.

Delap should be reintroduced to the squad as well.

It will be a struggle to qualify for the WC in 2006 no matter who plays. The EC is easier to qualify for and we only finished third in our group so I see no grounds for optimism.:(
