Apologies if this is in wrong forum....

Now that I'm nice and ADSL enabled, what is the general opinion of the best fileshar app?. Am wary of Kazaa, what what with all the nasties it installs.

    Thanks guys.

It depends on what you want to fileshare....

I like BitTorrent anyways. When you're downloading a file (or "torrent" as it's known because it can contain more than one file), you're also uploading what you've already downloaded (no choice). It stops people leeching. The ratio of downloading/uploading varies but it can be a bit annoying if the upload/download is something like 1.7 on a 500mb file when you know you've got a cap.....

Kazaalite for music and bit torrent for other stuff. Wouldnt touch regular kazaa.

if you ever used audiogalaxy then go to www.gltpoliane.cjb.com its a clone if AG. Emule is also a good option if you use www.sharereactor.com but with emule you have to leave it running for it to be any good.

Bittorrent is the best one imo. I use the Burst client, and i generally find it quite fast. AND theres no fakes WHATSOEVER!

"but with emule you have to leave it running for it to be any good."

sorry i didn't get it, don't you have to leave bittorrent clients on to download too?

btw isn't bit torrent a protocol? so if i install emule plus can i use bit torrent with it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭El_MUERkO

Bit Torrent with the RVS client, problem is you need a good upload speed to get a good download speed so it can be frustratingly slow.

One good thing is you know your getting what you ask for unlike Kazza or Emule.

I cap my Bittorrent upload speed to 4kb's, and i can still download at up to 50kb's from it! Use a program like netlimiter to reduce its usage. Works perfectly.

    1.5 gigs completed overnight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

I recommend IRC - you don't upload anything - its leaching only - its fast - all the newest stuff. Bittorrent is great but you upload at the same time - and usually the same amount - wouldn't recommend capping your upload as it will harm other people's downloads - not really in the spirit of sharing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,560 ✭✭✭Boro

With IRC though you often have to queue in DCC for ages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

sometimes it can take a while - but shop around - usually you'll only be waiting if something is just out - so look for soemone with a lot of slots on ircspy or packetnews. The speeds can be fantastic though once it gets going.

Is this the best way to do it? I can't do it from the BitTorrent client itself. If so - handy tip!

Its up to each person whether they want to cap or not, i know i've seeded files in Bittorrent before, for several days.

Most clients only allow you to set the upload speed as 10kb's minumum, or they limit your download speed because you've limited your upload so low, my method makes bittorrent think it has unlimited upload access, and so you will always be able to get full speeds, and after you can limit it externally (with Netlimiter) to a very low upload speed, but if you make it too low, you will shoot yourself in the foot, as it needs some upload bandwidth to manage the downloads.

Shot, i think i should be applauded! Using Linux instead of going with the traditional buggy OS shoud be recommeneded for everyone! Its not my fault if i don't want people to use up my bandwidth overly much. I want my linux distros tonight, not next week. And since no connection in ireland is full-duplex, i can;t get full speeds down AND up at the same time.

sorry yes it is www.gltpoliane.cjb.net its been down for a few days, server trouble.
sorry i didn't get it, don't you have to leave bittorrent clients on to download too?

ya sorry, you have to leave emule on not only to get the file but to build up any sort of decent speed. if you are downloading a file you could be on other peoples queues and if you disconnect and reconnect you lose your position in the queue. i dont know much about bit torrent ive only just got it but i hear its great.

99% of the time I'm using bittorrent, my upload is greater then my download.
Considering my max dl is 80k/s and my max upload is 12k/s, this sucks.

You don't share, you leech, there's a difference there that annoys more users more than anything else, myself included.

Here we are sharing/seeding files for people only to have greedy, self-centred sods with no patience like you mess it up for everyone else.

/me applauds your superbly lame way of "sharing"

Have you guessed yet? I use bittorent and I'm sick of leeches like you killing the experience for others :p

there's also sites on the net where you can download at max speeds (ie, 55KBps) and no uploads involved. Your downloading off fixed servers, not other users. Thats where I get my *stuff* from

AG was the best ever for music, espically live sets.
Many people have this new clone? is it anyway close good to AgG?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 94 ✭✭cmdrpaddy

its as good as AG in terms of stability and program features, but it suffers from a lack of users, there is just under 11,000 users now but only a few weeks ago it was around 2,000 so it is growing quite a bit. There is some trouble when it comes to seeing how many files you share, but others can still download them off you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,538 ✭✭✭PiE

God I wish AG was still around :(

Though I suppose I'll keep on eye on that GLT Polaine thing in case it starts getting good (there's only about 50 users online right now).

So does anybody use Earth station? I heard about it awhile ago but i never used it. Its 'supposed' to be more secure and stuff. So has anybody got any experience with it and whats it like?

    www.earthstation5.com

also can u set yur filesharing apps(kazaa lite) to use yur AV to scan downloads automatically like getright?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,558 ✭✭✭CyberGhost

P2P is all about sharing, and cutting uploads to others while downloading stuff at the max from the others is NOT good!

and btw is gltpoliane client better than kazaa's music? i mean which has more mp3s?

Ok heres my take on p2p

Anyone who uses hacked clients to stop uploading is an asshole
Its people like that who slow the downloads in the first place

As 4 apps heres my experience

Bittorrent : By far the best. Very fast very stable and there is a
lot of stuff to get. Best used with a site like suprnova.org

Kazaa : Avoid use kazaalite. Good 4 mp3's or with that verified
downloads site. Full of fakes though, i generally avoid it

Edonkey/Emule/Overnet : All esentially using the same network
I use emule because i get better speeds. Huge and i mean huge
amounts of info on this network. Speeds are generally slow but
if u dont have 2 worry about a cap (like me) then just cue a few
files (right now ive 76) and let them download over the course of
a few days. Sharereactor provides a great index of available files

Direct Connect : Huge and i mean huge amounts of info. Very few
fakes. I found it slow though for the most part. Its like irc but just
a lot more to download. Worth a look

Earthstation 5 : Good idea rubbish implementation. I installed it
    deleted it 5 mins later.

IRC : All 0day stuff. Can be forced to queue for a long time but
    usually worth the effort.

Ftp : By far the easiest way and the fastest if u have the contacts

Thats my take on what to use to get ur downloads
    Enjoy

I download from bt, I'd love to get fast download speeds but I dont, Mutants idea of using netlimiter increased my download speed a fair bit, I'm uploading at 10kb and downloading between 7 & 25kb whereas before I was uploading at 12/17 and downloading between 5 and 12.

I seed after I finish downloading, when I woke up this morning I'd uploaded over 800 meg, wanting a faster download is no great crime and I dont feel I'm robbing from anyone when I upload 3/4 times what I download.

Why oh why would you avoid using kazaalite? Kazaa MD is full of spyware and adware - who wants that? Kazaalite is a far more useful program.

keep away from earthstation 5. http://www.zeropaid.com/news/articles/auto/10022003i.php it seems to be pretty dodgey.

Downloading from binary newsgroups is good too.

I use Easynews (http://www.easynews.com/) - it's $10 a month, but totally worth it. It's a bit of a pain to figure out at the start, but when you've got the hang of it it's great.
There's a week trial available so you can see if you like it, but you need to enter your credit card number for this.

P2P is all about sharing, and cutting uploads to others while downloading stuff at the max from the others is NOT good!

I suppose i shouldhave made my position clearer... i DO limit my uplaods when i want something. I have no qualms about limiting my upload really slow, so i can finish the latest distros in one night.

BUT, what i forgot to say was that i UNlimit it afterwards (e.g. the next morning). So far on my connection i've an Upload:Download ratio of about 1.25-1 (ish). Thats inthe spirit of sharing! However my isp don;t like that, so i've cut back a lot lately, in both downloading and uploading.

Bittorrent ain;t the best for music, but rocks for movies... check it out. i have yet to get a corrupted download or bad avi or a fake off it! but i havn;t used it for much other than my linux download, and a few apps.

Thanks!, i'm pretty pissed off at downloading 600 mb movie only to find out that it has corrupted frames, but i think the cause of kazaa having corrupted frames is that, i usually have couple of BSODs while downloading and have to restart my pc, maybe causes it?

did i mention it is impossible to get a corrupt download off Bittorrent, unless the origional source was corrupt :D
