Google. For the same reasons, plus the Google Browser Buttons are invaluable (don't like the toolbar, and the built in box in Mozilla Firebird doesn't clear your last search).

    google.
the built in box in firebird is handy, definitely a shame there's no way to clear it (no easy way anyway...)

OK so Google is the best for most people but what else is good out there? Anyone else use any other good search engines?

    Google.

Google news on the other hand. It is good for searching but crap otherwise.

Also some of the spammers are finding ways to contaminate the database. Thankfully you can vote the SOB's out of the database.

dogpile.com ain't bad. Uses google and a host of others.
Google groups has to be one of the best though for NG
    searches.

    Google.

I think this thread has lost any real sense of progression. All hail Google.

my god I cant believe you all like google..I only try it as a last resort.

My favourite is profusion.com, you can almost guarantee the result you were looking for appears in the top ten. None of this stupid Google has found 1 billion results crap. Try it and see.

yep tried it looks different, feels different, not sure if it meets the need actually appears slow. I ll practice some more before deciding inthe meantime
all hail google and th e1 billion zillion matches in 0.24 secs.
    does it ever take longer??:D

    Googlebar for Mozilla / MozillaFirebird

I find google to be the best by far, I like the way you can search the country and find what your looking for in Ireland and not have to go through tons of sites from america before you find what you want.

Just tried my music name on it and its not as good (only 19 returns v googles 55) and it takes longer to display....

There is a very fancy graphical search engine out there which I tried one or twice but I cant remember its name. Anyone know?
It displays results in clusters that link, it looks great!

    Mike.

I like google because what I am looking for is within the first 4-5 search results. If it's a question I just hit Groups, or news I use that search.

There is also neat tricks with it.

    For example

    link:http://www.boards.ie/

Tells you all the sites that link to boards.ie

Also you can avoid DB contamination by searching far into the search list to find what you want.

images search is pretty cool too.

Hotbot text version used to be my favourite, though once I happened upon Google I never looked back :) Been Googling now for years!

But they're suffering a fair bit now from paid ranking and spam dictionaries :(

Still my search engine of choice though :)

    It is what it's.

If google cant deliver then I head to Altavista, and then to lycos.

Google, usually give you what you want all the time.

Altavista was the dogs bollix when it was owned by digital and ran on alpha's - now it's just a target advertising engine with some legit search results throw in.

    Google. Really handy.

And if you type in a US phone number, it gives you the person who the number is registered to:

    http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=617+8597414&meta=

    Sneaky.

Yep, definitely google. Nice uncluttered results, the toolbar is handy, especially the popup blocker and they change the site for event like Easter and Paddy's day.
