right we have all heard of the darkness...

do people think they are any good? will they last? personally i think they are a great fun band that has produced a great first album, but it is a bit of a return to yes, zeppelin etc. is it a return of classic rock n' roll that might lead to an eventual return of cock rock?

    what do the people think?

They're brilliant. They're a bit strange, a new age Queen maybe? They're a really interesting act though, great guitar work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

Singer is a pillock IMO, but they got some really funky guitar rifts, and a good load of solo's. Wether or not they will revive british rock'n'roll or not is still a bit early to tell, but the common folk seem to like em a lot.

they are Just a gimmick band and you know it! as good as they are they are just rehashing a bygone age. the future of music is not in the past. same type of deal as that pain for pleasure sum41 jobber. flash in the pan if you ask me. could be wrong though

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,264 ✭✭✭RicardoSmith

Seem to have some good licks, but I can't stand the songs or the voice of the singer. I hope its the satart of a general move away from the pop stuff though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭mr_angry

Novelty value really. The simple fact is that shocking things get attention - at the moment they have it, but it wont last for long.

they have some cool riffs and all but as far as i see it

when a band is played on MTV hits it can't be good :S

The way they say that they're an original band pisses me off, then again maybe they want it like that...

Okay, mentioning Zeppelin and The darkness in the same sentence is sacrelige, straight off. You might as well compare Spinal Tap to Zeppelin if thats the case. Because face it, thats all the darkenss are, a brand new spinal tap. An utter joke. Only difference being the darkenss wont be remembered this time next year, spinal tap will.

It's not like they appeared over night, they've been knocking around for a good while, pub gigs and all, but only recently hit the spotlight. I think they're quality, IMO there's nothing wrong with bringing back classic rock from the 70's, as it was by far the best decade for music ever. And pornapster they're original because they write their own music and play their own instruments, just because the music fits into a certain genre doesn't mean they're not original. But eh, whether they'll last is another thing, only a second album will tell.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

i think they are excellent. i really like Permission To Land and that gig they did for the MTV2 5th birthday was brilliant. the 2nd album will tell all

To be honest, I don't even think that Permission To Land is that good. I only really like "Black Shuck", "Get Your Hands Off My Woman", and "Growing On Me". The rest is average, at best.

fad band i'de say, music gets old fast.
although get your hands offa my woman and love on the rocks is cool.

    Nope,

    no use
my cat yowling outside is beeter the the singer.

Very good live. Saw them play with Deep Purple & Lynyrd Skynyrd in the Wembly Arena, and they fitted right in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

Probably a fad band, but they take attention away from the angsty pimply fools who barely know three power chords.

I mean to thoroughly enjoy this fad while it lasts, however. Rock'n'roll, gotta love it. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 849 ✭✭✭Liquorice

They're only a gimmick, as much as they deny that they're taking the piss, they are only a product of smart marketing. They won't last very long, but they are a bit of fun, and their guitarists are quite good.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 551 ✭✭✭funktastic

The Darkness are just a tribute band throwing 70's riffs together that made it lucky.
Saying that they are original because they play their own instruments and write their own songs is crap, their the Oasis to the rock genre, meshing old riffs together, which is fine if you like that, but it's far from original.
Its all been done before , so how does that make it original, they're not doing one thing different at all! Everybody who buys their album/sees their videos can tell this instantly. Their like a band that weens younger kids onto the original 70's rock bands, which can be seen as a good thing in itself, depending on your point of view.
Fair play to them though, cashing in on a trend, if people don't want to buy proper original hard rock albums and would prefer to waste their cash on a sub-standard tribute bands album it's up to them.

a piss take band that wont be here for long!
if u want to go anywhere the secret being original, Just think of any great band tool, NIN, korn, faith no more etc. Its theses bands that offer us something new that appeals to us not some repackaged 70's mockery

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭AngelofFire

the darkness are brilliant. their stuff is so original. if this thread was posted in the music/radio forum we would see a lot more posts from people heaping praise on them. they are a great live band too. they nearly blew metallica off stage at the RDS in august.

Please go back to ure TOTP's magazine!

If TOTP suggest The darkness are great live, then theyre right.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭AngelofFire

TOTP?? how dare u label me a teenybobber ive been a fan of rock based music since the mid 90s. i like the darkness purely for artistc reasons i am not influenced by neither pop charts nor by people who hang around temple bar dressed in black who talk in phonie american accents who think they know everything about music.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 917 ✭✭✭carbonkid

just got their ablum...i really like them...and i can be really picky when it comes to music. they'revery ac/dc. saw them backing metallica just a while ago.

has anyone seen the vid for i believe in a thing called love:D
only ur man from darkness can wear an all in one leotard and teera while fighting a monster like from flash:p

the darkness are so cheesy its unbelieveable. i like them in a purely superficial way but have no artistic credibility whatsoever. ive heard that they are really serious about what they do but what they do is just hook you with some catchy funny choruses and make you believe they are great and thats it. they are going to let alot of people down with their next album because you can only take so much cheese without getting sick. the darkness are a fad that will wear out in a couple of months after they've released all their singles after that you will be ashamed to have like them, maybe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,289 ✭✭✭gucci

yes their cheesy and catchy and we should be ashamed if we like them but i do!
their a bit of a laugh really and theres good guitar solos in it.the album maintains a good standard throughout aslo.love your mans tattoo with the fire coming out of his pants and have made myself very hoarse trying to reach the high notes!!!!

how long they will last, cant say but think il always keep their album handy for whacking on lighter occasions!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,149 ✭✭✭✭Lemming

Personally, I think they're brilliant. I really like "Permission to Land". It's such a breath of fresh air from everything out there at the moment. Would I compare them to Thin Lizzy, Metallica, Led Zeppelin et al? I won't say "no", but I will say "not yet". Only time will tell if they have staying power.

Very Spinal Tap meets Queen, but they're good. And they're nae bad live either ;)

Is it just me or are a lot of you really depressed and can't be arsed to listen to happy or humourous music?

Not only that. your judging them because they wear dodgy clothes, have cheesy videos and they act like tw*ts in them. Oh yeah, and the fact that he's not taking his singing very seriously.

Don't you realise that they're just having a laugh while they play music that they enjoy playing.

I mean loads of people do similar things, just to keep themselves entertained.

Ozzy does a whole range of dodgy things, getting his ass out on stage being one of them.

Matt Bellamy constantly pulls stupid faces.

I'm sure you can think of some more.

Have to agree 100%. If it's not angsty stuff in E minor, it seems like it's not rock to some..

You people should be happy that Rock N' Roll is actually starting to get some airplay.

It's kind of wierd how rock music is selling really well this year.

I mean The Darkness and Muse seem to be the biggest thing at the moment. Both of them being right at top of the charts in the UK.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Yeah, we should be thankful that there are talented musicians getting the recognition they deserve rather than some geek with a laptop putting out bleeps and beats. Gimme the Darkness any day. They love their AC/DC and that's good enough for me.

Just because they play their music with a sense of humour doesn't mean it's less vaild than some miserable shoe-gazer. Plus, the pic on the album sleeve of the bass player playing chess made me laugh big time.:D

Lighten up and give them a chance.

saw them at the metallica gig in August and thought they were excellent , got the album and was fairly disappointed by a lot of it , they sorta remind me of a pop ACDC or something , i dont think they`ll last , but i was in a club the other night , all pop all nite and then i believe in a thing called loooove at the end , think it was said already , yeah more of a novely band than anything id say .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,289 ✭✭✭gucci

aaah it was almost ok for us to like and enjoy them but the curse of any band needing to know if thier hard enough is if they get played at your local chart disco,no turning back from there lads, lets all pretend we never liked them again......the darkness?only a shower of nancy boys listen to that lark!!

    - I don't mind the band themselves but what I can;t understand is how some people don't cop that they are essentially a piss-take. I was into hair-rock back in the 80's so I recognise all the moves! There's definitely a place for them today in that its great music when you're locked, and how many rock bands since AC/DC can you say that about?

However, what is the f*ckin story with all the airplay? Its unreal

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 348 ✭✭Fuhrio

I saw them support Metallica in august.

At the start they said "we're the darkness!"
    They got a cheer...

Then they made the fatal mistake...
They said "we're from east england!"

Sadly, you could feel their popularity fall through the floor...

Their music is good for a day or 2 but it wares off pretty quick.

To be honest I think there was a bit of sarcasm there, the way that if a rock band is liked by the mainstream then nobody (with any rock 'cred') is allowed / will allow themselves to like them anymore, which is just plain dumb. The only band I can think of that has gotten away with it, to a certain extent, is Guns N' Roses.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 45 jt

when i heard em first on radio i thought it was a joke, but then somebody gave me the CD and I think they are straight up rockers

I remember AC/DC live in the RDS in '82 or '83, supported by some yank rock band - jeez what were they called- begins with a Y ?! The Darkness are like a crazy mix of the AC/DC and that other group.

Black Shuck and Givin it up are very AC/DC. The dancin on a friday night song has some beautiful Thin Lizzy style guitar. I hear bits of Iron maiden in some others and then yank stadium rock throughout.

the singer sounds like he's been to a lot of elocution classes but still belts it out. I think they have either been very lucky with their first album or else are mini-geniuses.

'Givin it up' is about the best rock and roll I've heard since 'Ain't no fun waitin round to be a millionaire' or some of the stuff on Back in black.

I saw them first on the mtv and thought they were taking the piss. But they have grown on me so i got the cd. Some really good songs it diffently has that ac/dc ring to it .Its good to hear a good rock band again . to many pop groups around.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,289 ✭✭✭gucci

The darkness are offically a rock band
seen a great live gig by big generator last night and they played "i believe in a thing called love"......thats good enough for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭niallith

emmm think there quite good ,see nthem at metallica concert they was really good live singer gets a tad annoyin after a while

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭mr_angry

"Yes" - one of the craziest bands ever, and the butt of many a joke. I always kinda liked them! (Don't tell anyone)

    no mr-angry it wasn't yes

these were bon jovi lookalikes (b4 bon jovi came along)
they were called something like YTC - google isn't helping me remember, I'm sure it'll come to me yet.

    thanks anyway
    jt

http://www.ac-dc.net/story1/index.html tells me they were called Y&T which stood for yesterday and Today (I think)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 68 ✭✭9lives

...but they're definitely the best act this year. The people who don't like them seem to be mainly people who had made their mind up before they heard the music.

Don't think they blew Metallica off the stage at the RDS as Metallica were awesome. However I think "Permission to Land" knocks 'St Anger' into a cocked hat and urinates on it, frankly.

Their gig at Vicar Street was brilliant - rock the way it should be performed. But then again Def Leppard are still playing rock that way too and they don't get any kudos for it.

One album band, but 'I Believe In a Thing Called Love' is the rock equivalent of 'Take On Me'...
