Line activated... but no link

    Heyho,

I used to have netsource RaDsl as some of you know, 5 months i had it. On the 15th September I cancelled the service. On the 25th the line went dead. I ordered eircom starter pack on the 25th iswell.

Yesturday my line was activated (told twice it was successfully activated at the exchange) but there is no link light on my router. I'm using the exact same equipment as when I had netsource. My question is, do I need different equipment for connecting, like the splitter thing that is in the phone socket?

I have a Dlink Dsl 504 router btw...

Are you using the right VC settings?

    VPI 8
    VCI 35

you need different VPI/VCI settings to work with eircom than netsource as was already mentioned. if you are using your existing equipment you'll only get the basic settings from eircom dsl support as they won't support 3rd party hardware.

you'll need to connect (usually through your web browser) to the dsl router via its IP address to change these settings.

you'll need to have a look at your hardware documentation to find out how to do this or the website of the HW M/F, unless someone else here has experience with the routers netsource use (what is it by the way?).

good luck and keep trying, it'll all be worth it in the end!

I use the exact same VPI/VCI settings with eircom and netsource and they both work.
as for the splitter id say mits a standard piece of kit.

try resetting the 504 to factory defaults that normally fixs any bugs i have with it.

thanks for advice but I dont see how changing the vpi settings would make any difference. I'm not getting the basic Dsl link light on my router. I'll do what is suggested above, I'm getting the eircom modem and splitters sent out to me, and getting an engineer hopefully to check the line tommorow.

BTW, while I'm at it. Eircom's premium 1550 technical support team are useless. I waisted about 10quid on calls today and got nowhere. The best they could suggest was to not use any filters, connecting the router directly to the phone line ??? and eventually I ended up explaining to them the difference between adsl and Radsl

Change your authentication method perhaps? Make sure it's CHAP

all he has to change is the username and password.

But thats not the problem, ando, this is probably an eircom cock up. They happen now and then (every day ). What has happened is they have probably enabled someone else's line. It happened one of my work mates. Which was a pain but we got it sorted. Contact their sales dept, as thats who its with until that link light goes live :)

i'd say that this is an eircom issue, as the link light on an adsl modem is independent of the ATM setting and the PPPoE settings so i'd say their is an issue with the jumpering at the exchange especially as you had a synch on Netsource, so i would get back on to eircom at that point

I have rang eircom 3 times today and told them it is not a problem at my end. Supprise supprise, eircom phoned me back and gave me the 'we dont support your adsl modem'

The engineers said they think its my router that is the problem. I told them I have 2 routers (also have a spare Zyzel router), none of them get a link... 'uhm well... erm.. hmm'

The best they could do with me is to send out the eircom modem and filters to me, which btw takes another couple of days at least   , then if I'm still not connecting with the proper modem, I have to call that god damn 1550 78cent a minute number again to log another complaint...

ok ok, they rang me up again

they told me there was an 'outstanding cease order'. The line should be active now... and hey presto, now I'm finally on eircom dsl.

so far I'm really impressed, much faster than netsource, in general browsing and Pings:

    C:\>ping clarity.jolt.co.uk

Pinging clarity.jolt.co.uk [195.149.21.11] with 32 bytes of data:

    Ping statistics for 195.149.21.11:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 16ms, Maximum = 31ms, Average = 19ms

    Sweeet

    :D

PS, for those wishing to swap ISP's:
For the record, the time it took for me to cancel netsource, to finally getting onto another DSL provider was 4 weeks, 2 days

VPI/VCI is normally different for different DSL providers , and without the correct values you won't be able to get connected. I was assuming netsource used different values to eircom, but i guess not.

as for plugging the line into your socket without the microfilter, that's to be certain that the filter is not the problem, as DSL should work fine without a filter, you just won't be able to use a phone with it.

as for crap support, it really does depend on who you get through to. they do have some really good techs there, but like everywhere else they need a certain amount of people to answer calls and its not always possible to have the best staff all the time.

not making excuses for them or anything, just stating a fact.:p
