    Anyone recommend a decent java book for a beginner, i'm not doing it on my course but i'd like to learn it as a hobby

    i dunno syco, i just wanna learn from beginners as it'd be handy to have.. i'm good at (laughs) VB but that's useless for writing programs.. i just want a good knowledge of java for when i get a job!

    try learn php or something, not that hard and is deadly if you are any way into web dev also.

    few here kewl enough for cobol [or braindead ...let you decide heh]

    ...books - any technical book, always go O'Reilly, can't get any better

    The best java book that exists is "java how to program" by dietel and dietel, make sure it's the fifth edition. the previous editions are way out of date. This book rocks, it is everything you'll ever need to know about java and a monkey could understand it!

    2 of erm [c++ 1 good, java evil]

    the book is all over the kip; o'reilly all the way :D

    the best help for me when doing java last year were the tutorials on the sun website, but i didn't bother with any books so i couldn't tell you if it's better than whats available in the lrc
