Towns that people like

After following the recent Crap Towns thread, I’m beginning to wonder what everyone wants from their home towns etc.

So, I’ll nominate my home town.

    Navan

Yes, I know the accent can put people off, and like a lot of places within reasonable commuting distance from Dublin, there is a high percentage of Dubs moving out here. So, its going through a transition period, but those children growing up here of Dublin parents will relate more to Meath, in time, as they age.

The existing locals look down on the outsiders as they incorrectly perceive them to be lowlifes from the Dublin Northside. Yes, they may be predominately from the Northside but scumbags/skangers they are not. Just ordinary working people, working hard, and achieving their potential.

Navan suffers from the Navan Man image, but you will get people like that, anywhere.

The town now has an increased number of retail units, (for a town of this size, the shopping centre is excellent) and you can tell by some of the new businesses that they are targeting a more affluent clientele, be they clothes shops, restaurants, (upmarket Chinese and Indian, Italian, plus three others that I would recommend in addition)

There are some very nice pubs, where you do not feel threatened in anyway. (Yes, I or 2 others that I wouldn’t bother with, as well). A vast number of coffee shops/delis that should try and stay open later, if we are to effect a café culture in this country

In two years we will have our own Arts Centre and a new town park, situated to the north of the town. We already have a six-screen cinema, though there is already a strong emphasis on the Arts with an active Musical Society and Theatre Group. A swimming pool and leisure centre also being only 3 years old. Golf courses a plenty, and a racecourse just two miles out of the town. GAA ground right in the middle of twon, as well as an athletics track and rugby club. The council and tidy towns committee have made significant inroads in making the town presentable and this is being maintained.

St Mary’s Church has probably the best acoustics for many a mile, witness to a number of recent concerts there.

I haven’t mentioned all the historical areas within close proximity – Tara, Slane, Newgrange
On the negative side, but this would correspond to any urban environment in the western world, kicking out time is a problem for the town.
Navan’s getting there, it just needs more time to achieve it’s potential. A few more successful local industries would help.

Id have to put forward Clifden in Co Galway as a favourite of mine... been there a few times and the place is a lovely town if you want to get away from it all..

There is lots to see and do during the summer and in the winter when all the tourists have gone, the population shrinks to about 1200 people and the town has a real friendly and homely feel to it... you will have no problems striking up a conversaton with a complete stranger and I must say, anytime Ive been there Ive never seen anything bad about it..

There is the prospect of a lot of development happening within the town, but they seem to be handling it fairly well and hopefully it will stay that way..

There are some fantastic views along the coastroads and the sky road has some of the most amazing views you will ever see in Ireland..

Some great pubs and a few nice restaurants too.. small and friendly with lots to do.. :)

Cavan town is an alright place. There is loads of things to do in it, and loads of different things on the way/new to the town inc. Argos, Woodies, KFC, Bowling...

There's a few scumbags around it too, but it isn't a problem for a town of its size.

Have grown quite fond of Spiddal in Galway myself - views of Clare, the cliffs of Moher, the bay seperating the two, the friendly atmosphere in the pubs and most of the locals I chatted too down by the pier and even the bus driver between Spiddal and Galway town was a pleasure to chat to :)

It's the start of Connemara, how could you not love it :D

Skibereen , Schull and Bandon in Cork
    Dingle in Kerry

strange how it's so much harder to think of places you like than those you don't !
Also makes me think of all the counties I have spent little / no time in at all , like Sligo, Donegal and legendary Leitrim.

Dublin City - it's big, it's fucked up, the traffic's mental, drinks' incredibly expensive, crimes getting worse, but by god I love it to bits, Ronnie Drew 98fm.

Galway City - I love it's bohemian atmosphere and I've never, ever had anything short of a brilliant time when I've been there.

I quite like Tralee despite it having the strangest one way system known to man. It makes no sense and you just have to rely on instincts and the stars to escape it

Kilkenny - So beautiful that if it was a woman it'd have broken my heart by now.

    Blarney - Co Cork <probably the best>
Westport - Co Mayo <probably the bestest... >
Fahan - Co Donegal <not really a town.. but who cares :) >

When did “Dublin City” and “Galway City” become demoted to towns?

The towns that most Irish people usually like are ones they only spend a weekend in (or a week at most) and don’t actually live there. The Irish locals normal dislike/hate the place for some reason or another.

One big bumpy patch of road between Buncrana & Burnfoot! And I never thought Lisfannon was a nice beach.

I like Buncrana myself, nice town, and getting better.
