Swollen Neck Glands

Just wondered if anyone here ever had symptons similar to this, and if you did what was the condition you had?

I've gone to my gp, but he said it was nothing to worry about, and would probably go away. He didn't seem to think it was any kind of virus. He looked into my throat, but mustn't have seen much - he didn't say anyhow.

You know the large neck glands/muscle which comes down from behind the ear and down the neck towards the shoulder (on both sides of the neck); well, in the middle of the night these two neck glands feel swollen, and I sense as if they're pressing in a little on my windpipe. Also, I feel a little warm in the face, and my throat becomes quite dry which wakens me up and I have to drink a little water.

This happens once every 1 or 2 days, but really only in the middle of the night. Also, I have *not* had a sore or hoarse throat. It's been happening for the last 4 or 5 months. Has anyone ever had anything similar to this, and if so what did you have?

You could have symptoms similar to what you re describing due to dehydration.

Sleep with the window open the room may be too hot at night and drink more water.

If you find your room is very hot, leave a large bowl of cold water to evaporate in your room.

If you still feel bad in a week or two, go back to your GP.

Yeah I've tried leaving the window open at night and it does help a little.

Though the room is not any warmer than it was in the past (I haven't had any new heating system or radiators put in), so I'm sure there must be some sort of medical reason.

I'm not sure why I would be suffering from dehydration, as this has never happened to me before - it just started about 4 or months ago but doesn't seem to be going.

The gp didn't seem to know what it was. Just said it unlikely to be a virus, and would probably clear eventually...

Ok, well if you are not confident with your GP get a second opinion.

Noone here can solve your problem.

Its unlikely to be a virus, mainly because if there is inflammation due to a viral infection, it would be prolonged and not just go away after a day or so.

It could be a mucosal problem broght about by poor nutritional intake. If it was particularly agrivated for reasons such as poor oral hygene, high alcohol consumption or eating calorie rich/acidic foods then you may seem inflammation.

Its seen alot in eating disorders and can be seen in patients undergoing chemotherapy. If either of these applied to you, you wouldn't be puzzled or posting here I assume. so I go back to nutrition.dehydration which is why I suggested drinking more water (also cut down on sugar drinks and try get vitamin suppliments)

If you have been on any medication recently make sure your doctor knows when you go to him next.

Sounds like an Allergy. I suffer with something similar myself, Try using an anti histamine spray like beccanese (probably spelt ass ways!) Personally I'm allergic to house dust/mites etc and I also suffer from hay fever. Unless I drink lots of water on a very regular basis, my glands swell up to the point of restricting my ability to eat or drink! Not as funny as it sounds! get a second opinion and try and rule out some of the possibilities until you find something that alleviates your symptoms!
    Hope this helps

    Sounds like an Allergy.

I agree, a new pillow and mattress may help. You can also get anti allergy covers for both.

    consider me frowning

Farlo, there will be no bumping in this forum, I prefer for threads to die naturally if no one is inclined to respond to them
    are you pod?

No, Farlo isn't pod. I am the one and only pod.

btw, I recently stayed at a relatives house for a couple of days but the same thing happened to my throat/neck. So, I'm not sure what's going on...

pablo21 the anti histamine spray "beccanese" which you mentioned, is that available over the counter, or is it prescribed?
