During a hairbrain experiment i replaced an aix passwd and group file with a solaris one - rebooted
    Now i can't login to AIX - i'm sure it's a password encryption problem

yeah i know - critizim accepted!

Does anyone know what i can do i have backups of the original files on the machine - reinstalling the OS is an option but i can't boot from the CDRom,

    Any (helpful) suggestions welcome....

Do you have a boot disk? you should always have a boot disk!! If not - go make one! and then you can boot up from the kernel on the floppy, log in as root, mount that hdd, and replace the files you replaced.

Any chance your tape drive is bootable?
If the backup was done with mksysb you might be VERY lucky.

I pressed f1 during boot to interrupt boot
    set boot device to cd0
then rebooted from cdrom - re-added os files
    working now
    cheers for suggestions
