    Hi all,

Im interested in changing to O2 from Voda, my contract expires sometime in November, now what I want to know is, do vodafone just go and start up a new contract if you dont say anything or do you have to renew it?

Also, if i want to avail of number portability i guess i need to change to O2 before my contract is up right? (im guessing my number would be scrapped otherwise) That would mean paying the remainder of the contract to Voda right?

    Thanks alot for the help!

with o2 when your contract is up, you are automatically put on a month to month contract. I'd assume its a similar situation with vodafone.

No you still have a contract, you just dont have a commitment period anymore.

Bascially once you have served your contract lenth you are still given an account but you dont have any thing holding you from porting.

You can port at any time but if your in contract you must buy out the minimum duration on the contract with your existing operator before leaving them.

To put it simply if your contract is up on 15/11/03 with Vodafone then you have a couple of options

1 Leave now, take your number and buy out the contract

Pros - you get to move straight to o2 without waiting
Cons - paying for two contracts at once for one month

2 Leave after you contract is served, join o2

Pros - shop aroud for a better deal, plus your not paying for 2 contracts at the once
Cons - Staying with a operator you want to leave for an extra month

I reckon ill just wait it out then change, although the savings are negligable.

dont do it...O2 are thieving hounds......i myself done the opposite of you...and have to say i am much happier with vodafone...even if they do sponsor manu......also give them a call and express your feelings with them about the service...they will probably offer you some sort of deal;)

Explain to me why they are "thieving hounds" before I make a grevious mistake and change over.

    Cheers.

i am also confused  do you work for voda or something that you are using a nick like that ? also if you done a check between voda and o2 prices you will see that o2 are cheaper for both gsm and gprs pricing  but whatever rocks your boat,i ported over to o2 and found them much better:p

I've been with the 3 networks (both contract and prepaid) at various times. I have found that O2 are much better than Vodafone all round. Meteor are quite good too, but they don't have GPRS and also have poor coverage. I also found O2 to be more forgiving if you are late paying your bill. Vodafone had a "reconnection" charge of €30 (or something) if you were cut off, in addition to paying all your bill. O2 didn't have this (I don't know if it's still the same)? Anyone?

And now O2 are the first to introduce the one rate for all ireland, north and south. They have stopped trying to rip off the people who live and work along the border areas. Fair play to them I say

And the word from Vodaphone- sometime after Christmas ......maybe

well thats a well thought out point, eloquently made.

I am surprised that with reasoning like that you havent managed to close O2 down yet!

O2 and Vodafone offer much the same service except in two areas, Customer service and product innovation.

O2 have been best in practice with customer service for 3 years now (previously Digifone) and have more tailored solutions and products for customers than Vodafone.

In terms of pricing it depends on what numbers you call, if you call mostly Vodafone then they work out cheaper. Mostly O2 numbers and then they are cheaper. Same with texts too.

However if you call and even mix of numbers then O2 actually works out a bit better in terms of pricing because of FCV and lower rates rather than minutes based inclusive units.

I was just goin to start a thread asking about o2 contracts but nevermind,

anyway, im currently a skodafone pay as you go user but i saw a very attractive offer for the 6610 (or 6600 forget which both are good phones neway) in the window of the local o2 shop and was wondering has anyone availed of this offer or could tell me if its expensive to go from a pay as you go to a bill phone?

my main concern would be the rates for o2 to other network calls being as they are very high.

i asked in the shop about a deal that would suit the amount of credit that i would spend a month and he said something like a deal 4, where the charge per month is €15 euro with 100 free text messages.

    thoughts please

Whats you weekly top-up rate. What numbers do you ring.

If you prove that you have spent more than 60 euro in anyone month in the past 3 months then when you get a contract with o2 they will give you free SMS, Calls and MMS to another o2 number aswell as bringing your number over to o2.

Basically it depends on what you wanna do with the phone. If you text and call during all the time everyday then something like

    TWENTY
    Monthly Service Charge: eur 45
Monthly Free Call Value: eur 20

    Peak Off-Peak
    National Call Charges 28c 15c
    Calls to Voicemail 15c 15c
    O2 to O2 calls 15c 15c
    Calls to Mobiles 30c 30c
    Text Messages to O2 11c 11c
Text Messages to Mobile 13c 13c

Plus you get 100 texts a month for free. So if you send 3 texts a day your sorted for 60 mins of calls to other mobile numbers or 120 mins for calls to O2 mobiles plus if you find you ring more at the weekend to landlines and o2 number buy weekender option at 7.50 and that makes all calls 3c/min

Look on this site for priceplans http://web.o2.ie/portal/products_services/tariffs/choices/
and right here for add-on options http://web.o2.ie/portal/products_services/tariffs/addon/
