Looking for a simple, easy-to-use video editing tool for recompressing AVIs/MPEGs.

I've tried avidemux so far, but it only managed to "compress" a 200MB MPEG to 4.5 Gb, which is a bit counterproductive. I've downloaded transcode and ffmpeg, but they're a bit of a #mare to use with no GUIs.

transcode is probably ideal, and once you get the options you want,
stick them in a shell script and you'll never have to look at them again.
A frontend to parts of transcode is available called dvd::rip
    http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/

Maybe take a look at cinelerra. http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3
I've only used it for audio,
but it might do what you need. Very impressive, but needs a powerful machine or two.

There's also MainActor - a linux preview version is available at
    http://www.mainconcept.com/mainactor_v5.shtml#linux
    I didn't download it because I don't have broadband.
(Sometimes they take down the link as they switch between versions)

SuSE professional comes with the full version of MainActor which is something worth looking in to.

I'd love to use cinelerra, but I fear it would laugh at my machine.

I've tried using DVD-rip, but all the options are greyed out and I can't use the transcode part of it (maybe 'cause the DVD-ROm drive is disabled, but what I want to do is plain AVI/MPEG recompression).

Might reinstall it and see do the options ungreyify themselves...

Will check out MainActor, but the very name sounds like it would claim a gig over what my modest config can afford :)
