Na, that's not it Ronika but thanks for trying to help. The song is very political and is in response to Paul Brady's "The Island". If you aren't familiar with it, it is very interesting to listen to the both of them, back to back. No one seems to be aware of the song on this forum anyway, sadly. But, thanks again for trying.

As far as I know Wally Page wrote that song, Christy just covers it. I can't find the lyrics off hand, but maybe try a Wally Page site. If, indeed, there is one..

Thanks for that info Ger. I thought you were winding me up when I went searching for Wally Page and I was quite surprised that you weren't. Still can't get those lyrics however. If only I could find my CD, the lyrics might very well be with the album...."Unfinished Revoloution"....great album it is too. Anyway, thanks again buddy.

Hey Eugene, I have to apologize. the song I was thinking of was "Sergeants and their men" which has the line "he's 25, he's sick and tired, it's time to try the other side..." which was written like a good few Christy songs, by Wally Page.

However, you're dead right. The Other Side was written by the big lad himself. I even typed the lyrics out for ya.

THe Other Side - Christy Moore:

Where John paints in Carribean colours
And Tyrone boys dream of love upon the strand
Flowers heaped in gesture on the courthouse steps in Kerry
And I trampled on the outstretched hand
Roman posters on the wall outside the graveyard
“No divorce” is all they say
I saw a little sister of mercy
Invoke the wrath of God on polling day
Oh the Island where Tyrone boys dream of love upon the strand
Oh the Island where I trampled on the outstretched hand

The lady sends squaddies on the water
Geordie don’t be afraid to die
In blackened face he dreams of his darlin’ bairns and hinny
    On the watchtower overlookin’ Aughnacloy
In the maze the Tyrone boys are dreaming
Of making love upon the strand some day
On the news came a mid-Atlantic accent
Plastic bullet took Julie Livingstone away

The king he came to see his people
And he took a soldier by the hand
Eyes averted from the Gloucester Diamond
To comfort those who occupy the land
High above the clouds a promised heaven
Down here a confused and homeless child
While men in black declare a social order
Frightened women sail to the other side

All the young ones are leaving the Island
Out the door, down the steps, around the side
Unwanted they file through departure lounges
Like deportees dispersing far and wide
In the distance there’s cricket in Cloughjordan
The gentle sound of croquet on the lawn
As our children shackled by illegal status
Keep their heads down behind the Brooklyn wall

Thanks very much for that Ger. I was a little surprised when you initially suggested that Christy hadn't written this himself so I'm glad you discovered he did. Did you know the history of the song........Christy taking exception to Paul Brady's "The Island". Both songs expressing how two different poets see what is happening in Ireland at that particular time. Very interesting contrast I think. Anyway, thanks again.......betcha I find my CD now and the lyrics will be in it!
