What do i need to connect a 3650 to a PC?

I am expecting a 3650 early next week, and have been reading up on it, but its unclear which is the best way to connect to PC for putting extra apps on it. anyone recommend either Infared or Bluetooth? Also, where wud i get the equipment and how much does it cost?

Are there any sites you would recommend?

well ive had my 3650 since january and have been using an infrared adapter (usb) i bought in Maplins with no problems whatsoever, i also have a bluetooth adaptor and no problems there either!! both are fine for sending receiving data from the phone although blutooth is a lot faster... both work fine with the Nokia PC suite you get with the phone, im not sure if you can get a data cable, to do the same thing, but if you go to maplins they would be able to help you out with infrared and bluetooth adapters...

for some more in depth info on this phone with many of your questions you may have already delt with go to forumNokia free.org i find it a great place to get info/tips etc for most Nokia phones

    hope this helps:ninja:

What do i need to connect a 3650 to a PC?

Unlike most other Nokia's, the 3650 (and 7650 alike) don't have data cable support. Instead, the most common ways to connect your 3650 to your PC would be via IrDA or Bluetooth. I would recommend going for the Bluetooth route. Bluetooth for this particular phone has many advantages.

I'm sure others will add to the list but I can think of a few reasons off the top of my head: (1) I don't know the exact speeds but from experience, transferring images/videos/.sis files etc. is at least 5 times faster over Bluetooth. (2) As long as you're within 10 metres of your PC, you can connect your 3650 to the internet over your PC's internet connection, thus saving a packet on GPRS charges (there's a pun in that sentence :)). Eh, well there's loads of advantages, effeciency, reliabilty etc. all the buzwords!

where wud i get the equipment and how much does it cost?

For Bluetooth, you'd need a dongle, i.e. a little USB pendrive-shaped piece of equipment which would connect into one of your PC's USB slots. Most of the ones I've seen cost in the region of €50. You can buy them in most electronic goods stores, PCWorld etc. Apart from using a TDK dongle yonks ago, I don't have much knowledge of Bluetooth-PC connectivity with these phones. I'm sure someone like DubWireless could give you the low-down on the best way to connect them up.

Are there any sites you would recommend?

Check out Komplett.ie for some examples of Bluetooth dongles, just search for 'Bluetooth'.

Or... do a good old fashioned Google search!:)

    @Duritz
I've had the 3650 since April and for the most part its been very good!! Kepypad is sound u will get used to it but be warned it does take time, he he :)

Had a few issues with the symbian OS and instaiing apps, a word of advice is to make sure and back up your contacts and all the stuff u really don't want to lose before going playing with it.

When WAP access was FREE, I downloaded a **** load of stuff but the phone got kinda screwed up, apparently its a bug with firware version 2.5 or something! Yours will probably have the latest firmware upgrade but just back up in case, it should be easy to do once u get the BT dongle and the right software. I had to sens mine away and they wiped in so all the things were gone that were on the phone!

    All the best with it.

ive had a 3650 since april too, i only got round to getting a bluetooth dongle and i havnt been able to get the software to work with my phone, the reuter says connected but it seems the software doesnt realise what the reuter is saying im connect.

im lost but what can ya do,

moe , if you go into the phone shop off stephens green, not one of the big shops, a small corner shop phone shop, they will upgrade your firmware for free

he's just had the very un-enviable task of getting the phones to work with a bunch of different bluetooth adapters/cards (with most of the various software impelmentations out there) - although i've held on to most of my hair in the process ;)he's also on holiday so not posting much at the mo

defo go the bluetooth route over IR, suggest using a USB adapter / dongle (over a PC Card) even if using a laptop (as you have the flexibility to use the USB with both)

which one to choose... hardware wise you have the top end TDK adapter for performance / excellent support and updates / custom enhancements and apps etc.. but you can pay a premium compared to some others who offer less but still do the job... next would be your mid-range Belkin adapter again good performance / adequate support and updates... then there are several offertings from the likes of MSI, Billington etc which are usually fine but offer varying degrees of support and updates - best approach is to check out the vendors site and see if they offer support material and software updates online

whichever one you choose though you would be best using a Widcomm based Bluetooth implementation (all those mentioned above use this), as Bluetooth isn't supported natively in Windows (some support in XP) you have to install a Bluetooth Suite to make your adapter work and set up the communictions etc. - currently Widcomm make the most fully featured and well supported implementation out there (with TDK enhancing it to offer special support wizards)

ask back on here before you go purchasing if you want to check has anyone got that model / how they got it working etc...

if you were interested in a keypad to make a phone different - i'd have waited for the Siemens SX 1 - better handset than the 3650 and the keypad is almost as wacky :)

keypad design was a bit off the wall, but aimed more at the youth market, although the (upcoming) release of the 3660 will offer a more conservative input approach to the 3650

    hope that helps,

Just to say that I've been using a TDK BT dongle for 4 months with my 3650 and have had no problems after a few initial ones setting it up (on Windows 98)

I had previously tried IR but found it very flaky with my Compaq laptop. Sometimes, but rarely it worked fine. Mostly it just didn't work at all. Couldn't figure it out so I went with the BT and I can tell you it's dream to use. I sometimes send photo's and videos to my PC from the other side of the house and downstairs and it works perfectly.

Right then, i guess im going with Bluetooth. Phone still hasnt arrived. Was meant to be delivered on Monday...but thats a different story.

Judging by what you guys said i think i will go with bluetooth. Have any of you loaded 3rd party apps or games to the phone? http://www.nokia3650.net is a fairly good resource and has answered alot of my questions. Not being funny but its impossible to get and answer there, like one gets here. Cheers lads. Cant wait to get the phone now!

The apps I currently use are -

    1) Opera browser for...... er.... browsing
    2) Agile Messenger for IM
    3) GRPSChess for playing chess against anyone anywhere
    4) ActiveMail for email management
    5) Repligo for mobile document reading
    6) MP3Go for listening to my linguaphone audio. I wouldn't recommend for music.
    7) FExplorer for file management

I have read that alot of these have had to be sent back for repair, for no apparent reason. The majority have involved "GoBoy"...a gameboy emulator. I shall stay clear of that, seen as i am having alot of trouble getting the fone ( As this thread describes ).

Cheers for the help, will let you know how i get on when i have the fone. Ordered a belkin USB Bluetooth Dongle and am lookin out for a 128/256 MMC for it too.
