    http://www.ntl.com/locales/ie/en/athome/internet_cable.html

"Allowable Data Usage 1GB per day"

futher on down the page is says "...And there are no restrictions on how much you download!" but i'm sure this will be corrected

very sneaky from ntl. you think they'd have learned after the mess they made of this in the uk

warning first, as far as i know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

Didn\'t users in the UK protest so much about it that they had to lift the ban or increase the cap?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

lads for a good service for 30 euros a month against eircoms eqviliant package which is 20 euros more expensive a month and your only allowed 4gb a MONTH

you's are complaining about a cap of 1gb a DAY now if u used ntl's limit in 4 days you'd be going over eircom's monthly allowance

don't forget that only tallaght and lucan can get this good service

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 96 ✭✭MiloFoxburr

erm im in crumlin and im getting the service

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

if the trial in crumlin is successful then cable broadband will be made available to all ntl customers

if that's true where u get that info from and will it be available in bray???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,086 ✭✭✭carrotcake

    i read it here

i think that 1 GB is pretty reasonable considering a lot of isp in the usa are having trouble with the capcity needed for p2p whilst maintaing a good service.

but hopefully if the availablity increases in dub, enough people will complain and they will increase it.

do they give a dedicated ip ? and can u use ics to share the net connection ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,086 ✭✭✭carrotcake

no dedicated ip, but it tends to stay the same for a couple of months. ics isn't a problem

the cap in the uk died a horiable horiable death, thank god. they decided to make it a soft cap, and then it just kind of went away. people started not to pay for the service and the CEO got a load of junk mail and fax stuff complaining and they half aboloshied it, afaik. hope this happens here. im waiting on a reply from their customer service. they say only a few of their service reps have info about cable modem.

the cap is still going in the uk, i don't know where you heard that. just check any of the uk's ntl broadband forums and you're bound to find it. plus it's still in their user polity...

    http://www.ntlworld.com/legals/user-policy.htm
Nobody may use the Services, either directly or indirectly:

2(h) in excess of "normal use" bandwidth limits set out in this section.

"Normal use" of the service is defined as up to 1 gigabyte downstream of data transfer daily (which equates to approximately 200 music tracks, 650 short videos, 10,000 pictures or around 100 large software programmes downloaded per day).

i somehow think an mp3 is smaller than a video clip... a lot smaller. However its still a good deal, and i know i'd switch from IBB if it was at the right price.

im not to happy with the cap, but you could look at this an other way. im paying 20 euro for my 600k connection (billing mistake that i DONT want fixed!) and i have 3 computers on all the time. i get my mail served from home, my website is currently served @ home but im moving it becasue 128k is not fast enough, and my internet connection is still fast. im in work 8 hours a day, bed 8 hours a day and traveling to work and back 3 - 4 hours a day. that leaves me with 4 hours to play with my connection fully. i know i can leave stuff to download, but givin P2P is now getting **** because of the crap quality of songs (first 10 seconds repeated over and over, or first 30 seconds, noise for most of it and then 5 seconds at the end) and kazaa, one of the better places because of the shir amount of people sharing, starting to charge for their usage, i think P2P is out the window. im blocking it on my network. 1 gb is pretty sweet compaired to eircoms 133mb a day. the only thing ill complain about most is when i move back to linux. ill have to download quite a lot of source code (gentoo linux).

looks like capping is becoming very popular among ISPs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 944 ✭✭✭lotas

damn p2p will be the death of us all! :P

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 447 ✭✭MickFarr

This is awful, only 30GBs a month. I am going to cancel right away and move to Eircom! At least with Eircom you get 4GBs a month. lol ;)

NTL is still the best option if you can get it!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,086 ✭✭✭carrotcake

people need to stop using eircom's sorry offering as the standard by which all broadband services are judged

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,577 ✭✭✭CyberGhost

it's just a monopoly man, it's just a monopoly! we are getting squeezed, ISPs don't care about their customer, they care only about money, it's like ah you came down to 4 gigs right? ok! i'll come to 3.5, and i'll still be able to sell it because i'm the only one available here, don't like it? find something else ha ha ha

If caring about money is such a sin, why don't you just shell out the €200 a month for an uncapped connection yourself?

At a 48:1 contention ratio, any 512K service provides an "average" of 3GB of data per customer per month. It's simple arithmetic. So for every person who downloads 8G, you need 5 people who only download 2G.

At the moment, many of the exchanges aren't "full", so there's spare, unused capacity floating about (everything is provisioned in 2MB steps, which is enough for 192 customers at 48:1. So if there's only 100 customers on an exchange, then there's enough physical bandwidth for everyone to take 6G, if it was all spread out evenly over a whole month. But it's not spread out evenly, and there won't always be only 100 customers on the exchange).
