IBB low speeds anyone?

I have to say, that since i first got my broadband, i've noticed a definate drop in throughput. Where i used to get a stable 60kb's down, i can now max out at 50kb's, usually averaging 30kb's. And where i used to upload at up to 40kb's, i now upload at a max of 20 (at night time) and during the day it plummets to about 1-2kb's at times, but usually its about 5-10kb's. Also, listening to streaming radio is nigh on impossibly nowadays, and thats something i generally do a lot. I can;t even stream a 56k stream stably.

Is anyone else experiencing these problems?

i fail to see how thats important, as i used to get full speeds down, and full up...

But anyway, WinXP Pro, 850mhz Athlon, 256 ram. (i upgraded it but the mobo fried up, awaiting replacement). So now you know my system, can you tell me whats up with IBB, and is anyone else getting slow speeds?

Out of interest does anyone know the contention ratio for an Eircom DSL Broadband connection?

in reply to the first question, maybe they have been working on something near by and it has affected your connection of maybe more people just have the service and the connection is more contended now than it used to be. By the way you dont know if they are strict about their no excessive use policy do you?

To test my speeds i first got a nice big file, my choice was the CS 1.6 full installer, and used getright for multisourcing it, so as to not get limited by a slow server. For uploading all i could do was upload it to various places such as a friends FTP server (hé's on UBERfast internet, about 5meg/2.5meg) in britain.... then i tried my ntl webspace, still slow, then i tried geocities, still slow.

Then i went to several sites which offer upload and download speed testing, and they pretty much reported the same thing.
By the way you dont know if they are strict about their no excessive use policy do you?

Whats this policy? And why have i no recollection of seeing it before?

I've attached a picture of what my uploading looks like below.

edit: will add image in next 5 mins...

Yep. On a good day my downloads/pings spike a fair bit and ill get about 30-40kb/s.

On a day like today... well. I had to switch to dialup because no webpages would load and i was getting 60 seconds lag on IRC. I pinged my default gateway and i was getting responses between 300-1200ms with timeouts occuring very frequently. (The normal gateway ping time is 10ms).

I can't wait for the 1 year contract to run out. I know i'm not the only one.

i;m gonna send em another e-mail tomorrow, and maybe a call the day after.

i;m supposed to be able to get 512up maximum, and at 8-1 i should get 64kbps minimum, and i seem to be getting less than 30kbps

    What as in around 5k/s?

The excessive use policy is part of the contract you sign when you sign up. I read it through last night and it says abusive or excessive use will not be tolerated.

they seem to get routing/dns issues under heavy traffic loads on their network. I suspect that it's actually just some little weener leeching the pipe that you're on.

My connection goes up and down. It was brutal earlier and has gotten significantly better as the evening progressed. I'll be giving them a ring tomorrow, since it's been pretty bad these last few days.

All in all, I'm quite pleased with my service. I'm perfectly happy to pay the 48 euro that I'm being charged when the alternative is a) the rat, and b) 48:1 contention ratios

Its been in there as far back as i can remember first looking at IBB, doesn't go into detail about exactly what is excessive use,

its annoying that they dont because i can think of 100+ gigs of stuff that i want/need and i dont want them slowing me up.

Heh, mine runs out in... 4 days. 17th October 2002 was the day I got IBB, was their first res customer to sign up, and will prob be the first to leave tBh.

It can be good, but the ping spikes and general unreliability of the service is just too much.

Anyone got any advice on which xDSL package to go for?

Hmmm, they switched me to a new IP and gateway server, and the speeds are better, last night i averaged (over 8 hours) a speed of 42kb's down and 20kb's up. not too bad. Much better than i was getting, but i still have to test ingame pings.

My advice is get the adsl before you leave IBB, ADSL isn't that great unless you paying for denting contention. I mean i can't complain much, but don't be expecting a hugh improvement over ibb, and you will have a cap.
