Newstalk's mess

Would Newstalk106 ever get a grip?

When will it stop trying to do a 'public broadcasting' effort on the extreme cheap and start acting like a proper local - repeat local -radio station?

The whole thing is a mess. And the crap figures will continue until someone wakes up to the fact that Dubs don't give a rats' ass about what's going on down the country or in the North.

Like, I don't give a damn if some woman's house in Kilkenny, Lifford or Ennis caught fire (unless someone died). Or what the Northern Ireland Assembly will have to do to reconvene.

WE LIVE IN DUBLIN. PLEASE GIVE US DUBLIN NEWS WITH A DUBLIN SLANT.

Who cares if two Northern teams are in the All Ireland final? Unless it's Dublin, Meath or Kerry, we don't give a damn.

When farmers march on Dublin, don't just report it like RTE would. Editorialise! They're farmers marching on our city! What's the average Dubliner's attitude?

In case anyone thinks this overtly chauvinist, look at succecssful local radio stations in other parts of the country. Think they give a damn about Dublin local news? Think they're slow to report what "Dublin" is "up to" with thinly disguised contempt? Of course not! They know their audiences!

    Wake up, Newstalk!

here here...a bit of culchie bashing would go a long way in my opinion

I have listened to local radio in Kerry and mayo and I can tell you there is plenty of Dub/cork/other county bashing going on there

But I the All Ireland between 2 ulster teams is still the ALL Ireland and should be covered IMO

Would it not be even worse if they just had news about Dublin 24/7?

Anyway, maybe they have to as part of their license arrangement?

If Dubliner's don't give a damn about the rest of the country then why do the National Radio Stations i.e Radio 1, 2FM and Today FM have more listeners in Dublin per capita the anywhere else in the country. I think Newstalk 106 is the only real local station in Dublin that offers anything else other then endless pop music during the day and is excellent by and large. I think it has some flaws though one of which is Dublin Life on weekday afternoons which is quite possibly the worst and most boring Radio Programme in Ireland. I think Owen Sweeney in particular is a diabolical presenter who loves the sound of his own voice too much. They get the same prats in every week with stupid names like Clint Valoore who prattle on about their own boring lives ad nauseam. The programme also seems to have an identity crisis as to whether it is an arts and entertainment programme or a news and current affairs programme. City Edition seems to be suffering from the same crisis of identity and is far too similar to the breakfast programme and the lunchtime programme. I think David McWilliams, George Hook, Karen Coleman and Ger Gilroy are excellent presenters but the jury is very much out on Damien Kiberd, Roger Greene and Gerry O' Sullivan with his annoying Kerry accent.

I live in Waterford and would love to be able to hear NewsTalk 106 FM! I also think a Dublin station should think Dublin first.

    Mike.

    Elmo,

Yes, I like to know what's going on in Ireland. That's why we have Radio 1, 2FM, Today FM, RTE 1 tv, Network 2, about seven national newspapers, the same amount of Sunday newspapers, ireland.com, unison.ie, rte.ie and many other sources of national news.

All I'm asking for is ONE local news station which puts local news first.

    One.

Wherever you're from (I take it it's not Dublin from your concluding remarks), I'll bet they put local news first.

But I bet that that's "different", right?

    And Byte,

No they don't have to bump national items up the front "as part of their licence".

They got a LOCAL RADIO STATION licence.

    Local. Not national.

    Don't Assume

    and no.

I understand that you all seem to think international stories are more important then National ones and that Local stories are more important then Internation ones. However I bet I am wrong.

    1. Local News
    2. International News
    3. **** the North, I couldnt care less
    4. **** the boggers, I couldnt care less
