56k wireless router?

This is a little behind the times, I know, but is there such a thing as a wireless AP (802.11b's fine, but a/g would be great) that I can use to share a 56k dialup connection without additional hardware? I assumed such hardware would be available - I thought I remembered seeing it - but I've had no joy so far looking around the web sites of some of the big players (Linksys, Netgear, SMC, Buffalo...).

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I've been looking for the same thing.
    I haven't found one yet.
The best solution I could find is use
    and old 486, with a h/w modem,
    a h/w 802.11b card.
And play around with Linux Router Project
(Runs off a Floppy disk, no HD req'd
    and only 8/16MB RAM)
    Probably a cheap solution too.

Someone suggested using a wireless rs232 port thingy,
and running a modem off that...

    Inspector Gadget,
    What OS, etc?

The OS shouldn't really matter - although it's for recent Windows boxes (both flavours of XP) but I want a solution that doesn't involve using an old PC and some linux distro - I want something hardware only for size and maintentance simplicity reasons. (This isn't for me, so it needs to just work all the time)

Best I've found so far is the combination of an SMC Barricade 7004AWBR and an external serial modem... I suppose this is similar to your suggestion, HarryD.

    Cheers,

I was just wondering about this too. I already have a Belkin wireless router and a friend of mine has a 56k webramp he said he'd give me.

The webramp has 3 rs232 ports for connecting to modems and 5 ethernet ports. So the plan was to buy a serial 56k modem, plug it into the webramp and then connect that to the routers wan port.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of thing? I know its a little outside of the wireless forums scope seeing as I already have the wireless aspect of it working fine but it seemed relevant to this thread.

The webramp works fine with just a normal 802.11b Access Point plugged into one of the ethernet ports. The only thing you will notice is how long 56k takes to connect!!

    Thanks for the reply sirlinux.

The other thing I wanted to know is, can i have the wireless router doing the routing or will i have to stick that in AP only mode and have the webramp do the routing. I'd imagine the webramp which is a couple of years old wont have as nice features as the wireless router.

Well you cant turn off the routing features on the webramp, it does NAT by default, so if you enable the routing on your router as well you will be going through 2 layers of NAT, which works ok, but you can see problems, depends on what you want to use it for.

The 1st version of the Apple base Station was with an intenal modem, you might find some on ebay...
It's in fact a Lucent RG-1000, and has been sold also by Dell under their name.

And you can use one if you don't have a Mac.

It'll have 2 pc's wired into it and my laptop which is wireless. The router I have has DHCP, NAT,etc. Right, I have a fair idea of what I'm doing now, I'll mess around with it when I get the chance. Thanks for the help.
