Outside ADSL range

I just contacted Eircon today and they told me that my local exchange has been upgraded. Well bully for them but they then told me that I'm outside the ADSL range. They said it was a limit of 4km.

The only option they said was pay for ISDN, no way its too expensive and slow! :(

Is there any other option available? I live in monaghan, and isnt there some fiber cable being put down in this region?

I also heard of some new wirless technology that goes beyond line of sight. What are the options available for broadband for people who live beyond the 4km (specifially in the Monaghan region)?

I connect to the net around 36->38Kbs I dont know if this so good or bad or have any relevence to the quality of the line. I live around 5-7km from the exchange, but im not exactly sure where the exchange is.

It exists or will shortly, Fibre from Monaghan-Armagh (cheap UK bandwidth ) and wireless out from Monaghan town . The only problems with Monaghan is that it is Over-Drumlined so even Non- LOS kit could have problems off beyond SmithBoro :D

I'd say eircom are just playing it safe having a limit of 4km's. I think the real limit of Radsl is 5.5Km

BT who are somewhat ahead of Eircom in the Broadband stakes and have just recently stretched their DSL Broadband range from 5.5km to 6km or 64dB on the noise meter.

Eircom are playing it safe at the moment, but I reckon as soon as they get a more reliable performance from their hardware investment, you will find that they will introduce Rate Adaptive DSL that will see the range from house to exchange stretch to 5.5km.

Alot more people will be eligible for DSL at this stage assuming that ones' copper wiring is adequate to pass the line quality test.

Errr, Eircom's mainstream product is already RADSL.

That makes me wonder about the quality of the copper wiring used here in Ireland. BT's RDSL supports distances of 5.5km and have started offering eXtended reach which is the equivalent of stretching it to 6km

Although at this distance from the exchange you can be prone to alot more disconnections. So can spoil the "Always On" feel of the thing.

Eircoms RADSL does reach distances up to 5.5 - 6 km, however you would likely only get 256k/s.

thanx Muck;), yeah MTec is just accross from the army barracks in town.

I live around 5km north from it. I was reading there today that Digiweb is introducing Wireless Broadband and there is also the MAN thing going ahead, that you mentioned.

Does any of this mean that I can expect to have broadband connection in the future? If there is a MAN going around the town, is only people in the town centre going to benefit?

I can see the Cathedral spire from my house but thats pushing it, I wonder are they going to push ahead with Non- LOS kit? and if so whats the service/cost like?

The barracks is on a hill north of the town ISTR, why not simply ring MTec and post what they tell you in here for the benefit of all of us on Boards.

    1. Wassup with the crossborder fibre
    2. Wassup with wireless, prices and packages
    3. Will they use licenced or unlicenced kit (Digiweb could use either)
    4. Will it be in conjunction with Digiweb and how willl they complement each other.

I'll do that tomorrow and get back 2 ya!

just a point,i dont know if its relevant:-I know for certain that Monaghan Military Barracks has been recently upgraded (in the last year) with a complete new network, something related to Mtec. Im not sure on the excactly technical details but they have a network connection in each room and I think they are now using voice over IP for the phone service. There is a large number of routers located at various locations around the barracks.
