I think that his first act will be to look up every Sarah Connor in California and have them all executed.

    Arnie roolz.

    Go him.

In all fairness, I cant say I'm suprised.

But I think he might actually do ok, shockingly enough. I'd laugh if he made president, but in saying so, I'd far rather him than another Spawn-Of-Beelzebub like Bush.

    Arnie or Al Gore, really.
Although if I was American, I'd have voted for Gore.

Well if you look up the oppisation you'd see there was no real contest, who else would get it.

    Arnie.... what a guy,
he'd still be less violent then bush is..:)

I have to say I was a bit sceptical at first - especially with all this "I'll be back" stuff from his actual campaign, however after seeing most of his speech last night on Sky News I was impressed with his attitude and insistance on the fact that he is going to get the job done. No time for movies or anything else he said - he plans on (hopefully for him) seriously improving the Californian economy while also dealing with pollution and other serious environmental issues... He was democratically elected (which can't definitely even be said for Americas' President!) so fair play to him!

    Go Arnie! :)

dear god no, the only reason that he won was that he is a famous movie star, i don't think anyone could argue with that. Whether he has the ability to do the job is entirely another matter, as for his speech and pledges, they are all written by his advisors, not himself. and at the beginning of the campaign he hadn't a clue about some of the issues when asked. Maybe he won't do too bad, and if he does well though i don't think it will be through his own ability but through his wife and the team he has behind him. Now this may be no different than most politicians but moreso in his case.

The best thing about the whole election thing i think was the voter turnout for it, many only voting because of arnie, but anything that can combat voter apathy is a good thing. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how he gets on now.

On another point what does everyone think of all the allegations that have come out against him during the election? just a smear campaign or is there truth behind them? we've all been hearing for years about his wandering hands, but should these claims be taken seriously or dismissed as a character assination?

Personally i would have voted for the porn star out of the other 130 or so candidates ;)

you know it’s quite clear he’s a ‘ladies man’ with a serious case of wandering hands, but it would seem to me that if any of the women he 'man handled' really had a problem with him to the extent that they would sue, then why do they all wait until he runs for governor?
It makes me very cynical and the allegations were probably helped along by his opposition. I remember seeing him on the breakfast show – with Denise I believe, she made the mistake of interviewing him on the bed, jebus he couldn’t keep his hands to himself, he was so bad I couldn’t stop laughing.

    naturally

Thankfully, Arnie can never be president. I believe you have to be born in America to get that posting.

Seriously though, I don't think Arnie will actually be doing anything, I'd say most of the decision making will be done by the people around him. Which is fine considering the size of his brain.

i'd say he'll do fine, although is he going to retire from films? he can hardly do both can he?
there is supposed to be a terminator 4 isnt there?
    Kananga is right, pity though.

    that would be funny stuff.

In fact at the moment there is a piece of legislation going through which will allow people who were born in another country but live in America for x amount of years to become president, however these things take approx 6/7 years to totally ratify

I would say arnie is only a mouth piece with a popular name. Lets just hope that the people behind him are nothing like those behind george bush....

You're right too. Just saw this on De Dindo.

"TERMINATOR for president? In the new Washington, where the unthinkable occasionally becomes reality, it just might happen.

As Austrian-born Arnold Schwarzenegger basks in his victory as California Governor, a proposed constitutional amendment could remove one hurdle to a Schwarzenegger presidency: the requirement that presidents be born in America.

Several bills before the House would terminate the provision.

Founding fathers of the US wanted to keep any person with foreign or royalist interests out of the White House. Proposed changes call for naturalised citizens to be allowed to stand for president after a statutory period. One proposal says 20 years, the other 35 years.

Sponsors of the changes say it is wrong to discriminate among US citizens based on their birthplace.

The conventional wisdom around Washington has been that these proposals will not become law any time soon. A constitutional amendment takes years, needing approval by two-thirds of both houses of Congress and ratification by three-quarters of states.

But conventional wisdom has wilted in Washington over the last five years.

Current President George W Bush, for example, was installed by the vote of one judge in the Supreme Court after a month of legal wrangling over disputed results."

The majority of Politicans these days are nothing more than front men and puppets for the politican parties behind them and no where more so than in America.

By getting Arnie into office, that party has secured its position as the leader of the 5th largest economy in the world (California) and the power that goes with that. So thats why an actor was a natural choice for this role, he can deliver a line (or speech) and can do what his job is, to act...

Jeez the publicity this got all over the world was worth billions in advertising all because hes an already well established name in the home... like who doesnt know Arnie would be easier to count that who does knw him..

As Beruthiel said, Arnies hands have been wandering all over the place for years and no one has said anthing, so its not as if its not been common knowledge, and as for his political career, thats been on the books from day one, well since the day he got involved with the Kennedy/Shriver clan by marrying his wife, like how obvious was that?

As long as this frontman is willing to do what he's told and be the face of that party without getting into too much scandal then Arnie will do alright and he has now landed a nice place in the lucrative political circle which alone will be worth millions to him in business contacts and leads in the future..

    Tox

I'm sceptical about him, but at the same time he isn't the worst man for the job. Anyone that's had the career Arnie's had, being Mr. Universe and then in film must have a certain amount of dedication and intelligence. Marrying Shriver was an astute move on his part, so all we can do now is sit and wait and see how he gets on.

Plus, he was democratically elected, unlike Bush, so if he fecks up, the people of California have only themselves to blame.
Anyway look at Ronal Reagan. A B-list actor who made a half decent president.

    womaniser = Yes.

Anyone catch the UK show about him? (may of been on Sky). They showed his interview on the Big Brekfest where he on telly was feeling up Paula Yates and she was trying hard to stop him.

Also another female interviewer on another show, afterwards was put into a bear hug and told to come to his hotel room. She was sacked for complaining about it.

    Puppet = Most likely.

I am reminded of the Simpsons episode where they are picking a new Mayor (I would of voted for the water cooler) and they pick Sideshow Bob.

What is more intresting is arnies connection with Enron and the California blackouts. Surprised this is getting almost 0 news time in the US.

The enron documents are online for people to read (look for arnie thread in politics forum).

Does anyone remember a scene in the film demolition man where they mentioned reference about the Schwartzenager Presidential Library, seems kinda scary now!

Sylvester Stallone: "Hold it! The Schwarzenegger Library?"
Sandra Bullock: "Yes, the Schwarzenegger Presidential Library. Wasn't he an actor ?"
    Stallone: "Stop! He was President?"
Bullock: "Yes. Even though he was not born in this country, his popularity at the time caused the 61st Amendment...

im a little concerned actually that he won......well you remember the last time an austrian came into power in a forigen country!! (bad joke i know im sorry i couldnt resist)

tho fair enough no one is going to take him seriously for a while i mean HE'S THE TERMANTOR for god sake!! best of luck to him i say if he really means well i say go for it, look at regan he was an actor that got all the way to presidant!! im sure nobody took him seriously at the time either

someone told me about a TV presenter interviewing a voter. when the voter confirmed that he was voting for arnie, the presenter asked why. the reply was: " He always seems to pull through in his films, so im sure he will pull through as governer"...

sigh is all i can say. its now easy for me to see how he came into power

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,187 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

I know people may be mocking his intelligence but I dont think thats fair.
The guy was a millionaire before he became an actor due to body-building, gyms and heavy property invest. The guy is not stupid, and is quite financially astute which is what California needs right now.

He is also quite witty in unrehersed chat shows and other stuff, which to me, is a definite sign of intelligence.

To me the opposition knew there only way to win was a smear campaign as they could now win on popularity alone, and that is what most of the sexual claims were. I am not doubting there validity or saying they are true but there timing is highly suspicious.

Actually Arnie is quite a good business man and quite a fierce competitor. If you look at his past he has excelled in everything he has put his mind to. Just because he speaks in that slow austrian accent, doesn't mean he has no brain.

The man made people want to watch bodybuilding and it supposedly* quite popular in the late 70's(his prime)

I say good luck to him and hopefully he'll be successful
*Can't back up the statement with proof as I wasn't alive.

    Re; Arnies Win,

Strange as it may seem to some. Film Stars are in reality only human beings. They do not have supernatural powers, and are probably more aware of the risks of being a Politician in the USA, than most other candidates.

Arnie is already world famous, so he can not be looking for that. He genuinely seems to care, and with the Kennedy connection he could turn out to be a change for the better. Lets just hope he is given the opportunity to tackle the issues now facing him, and that he is not cut down in his prime by the Kennedy curse.

    I wish him well.

    P.:ninja:

Only in america, next he will be going for president, can he or does he have to be born over there to be president ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 482 ✭✭spooiirt!!

he needs to be born there to be president. but the americans might change the constitution, if he does a good job in california. he has an excellent team behind him, and hes smart enough to listen to them.

fair play to him anyway, he came to the u.s. with ten euros in his pocket, and now hes governor!

I think its hilarious Arnie getting in, but I must say it's a very strange election system they have in that state?.

Just off the top of my head I think Davis lost by 46/54 and Arnie got in on something like 45 percent! So if you do the maths you see that Arnie only got (.54 * .45 =) 24.3% of the vote! Even Hitler got more than that :)

well apparently there were around 200 other minor applicants
