My sister is living in an apartment down the road from me in Dublin city centre and she has to pay NTL every month for the basic channels. I get the same channels also but I am not with a cable company and I don't have to pay any money. How does she have to pay?

Also, sometimes the pipe goes on the TV and the TV's around the area, who am I supposed to ring when that happens? The last time I rang 11811 and told them that I couldn't recieve any channles on my TV and asked them to put me throught to someone who can help, she just kept asking me who my cable company was. when I told her I am not with anyone she was shocked and she thought I hadn't a clue.

Am I the one who is supposed to be paying cable charges?

Eh yeah. If by "basic" chans u mean UTV, BBC1+2, Sky1, Mtv, sky news etc etc then u have ntl cable .

Next time the cable doesnt work, and the tv goes blank, give them a ring and they'll sort you out.

That website say's that you have to pay NTL for the service. I don't pay NTL a penny, infact I have never received a letter from NTL in my life. I don't have a box on my window like my sister does and my cable runs up to my attic and it hasn't been changed since my grandfather lived in the house over 20 years ago, it is in a heap.

Is there anyone else who doesn't pay cable charges?

Yeah, they'll charge you for 20 years of non-payment:D

If you are getting free cable, then complaining to them about bad service is a bad idea, and also very cheeky.

It is most likely that your landlord has one line in the building, and split them "illegally" to all the apartments. Same happened to me in my last apartment... don't call NTL... not a good idea...

I am not in an apartment, I am living in a house that my father has lived in all his life and he told me my grandfather set up the cable. As I said it is wrecked and the reception is very bad at the moment so I need new cable badly. The cable is run up to my attic and if I want to set up a TV in a bedroom I have to get up in the attic and attach the cable to the other one. If I am not with NTL, how can it be proved that I have a TV? Could I also get away with paying my TV license by saying I have no TV?:D

BTW I sould have said, I have Sky digital at the moment but they have nothing to do with the basic channels that I need to watch UTV and Channel 4.

Also, I've asked around a few mates that live in the same houses around and they don't pay NTL either.

It's not totally uncommon for them lose track of sites, This often happend when the house changed ownership. They also lost some during the varoius mergers in the 70/80s

Maybe you are lucky enough to live an area where the UK channels can be recieved on an aerial
Many parts of North Dublin (from about Coolock Northwards) and the the foothills of the Dublin mountains can get a signal from Northern Ireland

Over the years Cablelink (and then NTL) struck deals with householders whereby they provided free cable to them in exchange for using their property to provide service to others.

For example, last year NTL agreed to not charge my parents for cable for three years provided they were allowed to run a cable from their house into a neighbouring estate where NTL subscribers were having reception difficulties. It's quite possible that in your case a similar deal was struck years ago and there's no record of it in NTL's systems. Apparently this was really common when Cablelink ran the network. Contacting NTL about this may just alert them to another "free" subscriber which they have out there.
