Failed DSL line test - what next?

Failed the line test with eircon. Their customer service is a joke, they seem to know nothing about anything. I'm under the impression that if I order a new line (at my expense:mad: ) that in all likelihood I'll probably pass. Is this advisable? Has anyone else done it? They sent me a letter which explained that the 'technical details' were that I was too far from the exchange (I live in Ranelagh and the exchange is in Rathmines - about 10 minutes walk!)

    Any ideas?

i wouldn't advise getting a new line unless your next door neighbour passed the line test.

i've been talking to "people in the know", and i've been told if you fail a line test, chances are your new line will fail again. after all, they'll just pull another wire off the pole for you.

if your neighbours are passing dsl test, then it could be something wrong with the wiring in your home, or the equipment you have connected to the line. that's something within your control.

also, lines are being periodically tested, so if you find out a problem and fix it, chances are you could pass the test in a few weeks time, when your line is tested again.

I failed the first linetest aswell... I then called the normal Eircom customer services dept. telling them that there was something wrong with my phoneline (modem speeds were at 32Kbit at the best).

They checked the line, said there was a fault, fixed it one week later and now I have ADSL.

The trick (in my case atleast) was not to ask the ADSL support, but the normal customer service support, complaining about the phone.

Yes, don't complain about problems with the internet at all, tell them you are having problems with normal voice calls, crackling, etc.
