Stupid Question?

    Hi all,

I live in an estate in Portlaoise. My house never had a phone, but as with all estates the provision is there (i.e. I assume the phone line is bungled with the cable etc).
Eircom tell me it's €130 for first time connection and then the standard charges apply.
As I'm not interested in having a phone line for talking (we all use our mobiles anyway) is there any other way of getting internet access? Do I need a phone line for all broadband internet access options, or does anyone know of any way the line installation charge could be included in the internet connection price?

ESAT will do a "data only" package on their own DSL product (the ~€50 package is just eircoms package resold - ESATs own DSL will set you back €110 a month, but it's a better service, by all accounts).

Portlaoise is listed as one of the
ESAT enabled exchanges but you'll have to call ESAT and talk them into taking your money, as they don't believe in advertsising their services on their website (they have been known to complain about low takeup of their services, oddly enough - do you think there's a connection?)

Problem with esat is the line has to be there in the first place. There is no way to avoid the installation charge.
