    Napster is dead.

If ya want music get a program like Kazaa.
I like using mIRC. Brilliant that is.

Answer is end of summer 1998

    Ah yeah, seen it.
the man who claimed the Napster idea was stole from him while he was asleep, thus "napster"

Not a bad film in fairness.

Is it not a bit dodgy downloading music over the net now (napster or Kazza), as i read somewhere about one of the record companies going after people. I personally know one person, who was contacted by a company, was was nearly charged? (I work with him, and he was using Kazza in work! ???

The way they did it was they downloaded music off someone who was sharing on the peer to peer network (in this case Kazaa) and then when they played the song / movie / whatever, then they took note of IP address. So, using the network alone is not going to get you charged, just if you share. Solution? Don't share your MP3's :)

Ironically, they used Kazaa lite and the makers of Kazaa have tried to take the RIAA to court for ... copyright infringement!

That happened to me. A company found me sharing a file with the name "Matrix ReLoaded.avi" (or something to that effect) and contacted my ISP who contacted me. I sent them an email back ensuring my ISP that the file in question was not in breach of any copyright (it wasn't... it was mislabelled by the person I got it from) and also that even if it had been, the company in question had not actually taken a copy of it and therefore had no evidence beyond the name of the file. I could have gone on more, but didn't want to antagonise the situation and lose the only affordable broadband available (NTL). I've since disabled all sharing in Kazaa. Better to be safe...

Ok, ok. I was using Napster in 2000, it was closed down sometime later that year. Dont call me a liar!!

With the kazaa, imesh etc. The record companies or RIAA CANNOT sue us here, that's a fact. We have different laws here. I use P2P 95% of all the time Im on net for years and I have not been contacted in any way. If you're downloading 6GB a day of MP3s, maybe a different story then, and rightly so, because this would probably be major pirating. A few songs here and there for personal use, who cares.
