    Hello,
all of my friends are either away travelling (and working) or are planning to go travelling soon. I am jealous. I want to go travelling too. I've already been working in America though, and for some reason Oz doesn't appeal that much, where should I go? Oh I am so restless............

Don't mention it. If you have any questions about the Japan idea I may be able to help, I spent ages reading up on it until I shelved the idea recently.

Go anywhere but Oz/Souteast Asia. It's been so overdone now as to be more dull than your dull job

It's only dull if you have done it before yourself ignatious, although agreed it's not an original idea any more.

I "gave up" because I have gotten a job a lot closer to what I'm qualified to do, plus it's in England so I'm still getting out of Ireland.

I may take another look at travelling further in a few years...

It's only dull/overdone if the only reason you're going is to brag about it in the pub.

Congrats on the new job Pete, did you have to go to interviews on the mainland to get it?

I think the whole "overdone" thing is part of the reason I don't want to head for Oz. I went to an extremely Irishy place in America before and it was like working in Tramore for the summer.

And just to get it off my chest: my boss is a spa he wears the thickest, stupidest hats, dear god, and he speaks management all of the time.

try New Zealand.. Supposed to be much better than Oz and a fair few jobs going there at the mo, but the weather isnt as extreme as Oz with the heat and all that..

I'm not sure I like your use of the work "mainland" but yes I went for 2 interviews in England.

I'd second that about New Zealand from what I've heard - how straight forward are visas?

no offence there pete.........has anyone been to NZ is it full of sheep too?

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,763 Mod ✭✭✭✭ToxicPaddy

yeah there's a lot of sheep, but thats cause its one of its main industries, its not as if you'll be walking down the street in a city and a herd of sheep strolls past.. lol

    have a look here...

I didnt see too many sheep on there :D

On top of that you get nearly NZ$2 for every €1..

So things will be a lot cheaper down there..

I'm going to New Zealand in January for 3 months! - I've done a fair bit of research into it - it looks amazing. I'm not working there however so I don't even need a visa 'cuz I'm only there for 3 months. :D

Ive been thinkin about NZ for a while now.. but for maybe a 4 - 6 week holiday due to work committments..

    So maybe Oct/Nov next year..

Its gonna be a bit expensive to arrange it all, like €1000 - €1200 for flights, accommodation, travelling, car hire for a week or two, organised tours (supposed to be some class ones over there for 18 - 35 age group) and other expenses.

Dont wanna half do it so looking at about €5k in total should cover it all...

Anyone know what sort of money I would require on a day to day basis for food etc?

Dont plan on eating or staying in 5 star hotels or anything like that, but dont plan on going hungry or living in squalor either...

It's going to be a lot more reasonable than over this end of the world. We all spend different amounts but if you could try get a typical figure that you might normally spend on holiday it will most likely be more then enough.

This is just a rough estimate of what to expect to spend over there. last year I was in Canada and was spending just under $40 a day on food and stuff.. wish works out at about €26..

But this isnt going to be all my money that im going with, Ill be bringing a few grand with me but would like to be able to splash out on some clothes and things when Im there..

Do you reckon NZ$50 a day would cover food or is that way over the top?
What would say an average main course cost in a bar or small cafe if I was to get food in one?

I had a 12 months working VISA for NZ and just came back few months ago. Let me say firstly i am not Irish. I found NZ very like Ireland: lots of drunk people and sheeps every where. :)

Didnt like Auckland much, far better Wellington. If I may suggest spend a few weeks in Auckland then in Wellington and take a decision. Go to South Island only for skying and site-seeing, there is no much job opportunities there.

There is a fairly nice hostel in Auckland centre with a recruitment agency in it, Can remember the name now, but i`ll look for it if you need.
