    Since my last post I have been doing al lot of thinking, I want to take a 350mhz Pentium II banger of a pc, an old Mitsubishi TV, the shell from an old arcade cab, TV out card and joystick board with 2 sticks n all the buttons n stuff and load up the mame roms and bang away, only problem is, its all very good in theory but;

    1. I need a good mame emulator with no glitches and easy to use (the profiles thing on set up is confusing the hell out of me)
    2. Not sure where to great the joy pads, the proper arcade ones
    3. Will the TV work ok?
    4. Am I crazy?

    help help

jesus christ, try running that through word next time..here, I did it for you. Yes, you are crazy :)

For MAME emulation you will of course require MAME but alas MAME is a cpu hungry person for the newer games I dont think the 350 would cut it. But never fear there are other emulators out there like FinalBurn that you could use for the emulation of the newer Capcom games etc that wouldnt be as hungry as MAME still couldnt see them as running flawlessly though. Although for the older games you should be ok.

The TV should be fine but you may be better off getting a cabinet from somewhere that has a decent monitor already in it. These can be picked up and there is a thread in one of the above links "Arcade cabinet Bargains" that may help you.

Post back with any other questions you have.

    http://www.ultimarc.com

the ipac is brilliant - way better than a keyboard hack, modified joysticks, etc

Wire it all up and it just works - even with 4 players all mashing keys and twirling sticks at the same time where hacked keyboards and pc joysticks tend to give up....

I used it and recommend it. :)

    hrmmm thats a good question...

Myself and a mate actually did two at once - the thing that inspired the whole project was that my mate had 4 old arcade machines in various states of disrepair in his garage, of which the best two were selected.

We decided not to keep the old screens as the chances are they'd had a good 10 years of use and were knackered. Besides which I had a big old 20" phillips monitor which was blurry round the edges which my boss had given me for that very reason.

So I kinda had a head start with the two biggest items off the list for free.

We made our own custom control panels - 2 sticks & 7 buttons/stick for those epic 2 player Mortal Kombat or street fighter battles. All the kit from Ultimarc set us back about $125US each. My mate's father is a workshop technician so he hooked us up with sheet metal bent to our specifications. Some nifty measurements, a drill, a chassis punch and a lick of paint and we had our control panels.

The only other major item was the MAME box. Scrounged an old case and a 6Gb Hdd to go with a 1.2GHz P3 Tualatin I'd got on the cheap - maybe the equivalent of 150 - 200 euro.

A few other sundries like a cheapie set of pc speakers guuted and the amp wired up to the arcade cabinet to get the authentic sounds, a few cables and a switch or two...

Appart from that, a lot of sawing, sanding, measuring, soldering & fiddling. Half the fun was building it :)

The biggest hassle was mounting the monitor - my mate used his older 19" which was mounted via a series of shelves. My monster hung from the original screen surrounds and consequently I had to lift the sheet of glass the covers the screen a centimeter or two to accomodate it.....
