    Hi,

I live with 5 other people in the house, and the majority want to have dialup internet access. I'm thinking of using the UTVip service.

The thing is the last time I did this, there was arguments about people using the internet, and not paying there fair share.

I'm going to be using windows 98SE, (it's an old PC), is there any software people would recommend to try and log whos using the internet the most.

IE. You turn on the PC, you click on IE, and you'd get a prompt to put in your name, (password wouldn't be necessary), and the software logs the time of the access and the duration.

    Thanks,
    LK.

Or you could use a proxy server. wingate from www.deerfield.com might do what you want. It keeps logs of who, when and where visited etc. It will also dial out on demand from any one of the clients, or if someone is not paying their share, you can limit / cancel their access

There is a demo version available for download.

Probably overkill for your situation, but I use an old pentium running Debian and LineControl to manage dialup for me. The other PCs have client software that you have to log on to, and the client is used to dial and hang up. It keeps detailed and accurate logs of online time.

For me, the major benefit is that I can see how much of my 180 hours I've used, but it breaks it down by user as well.

With squid you can do ACLs.

Maybe look at IPCop or indeed even Debian/Slackware/Red Head.

Just to clarify, everyone will be using this computer only for internet access. I'm not sharing the internet connection through a LAN.

as it's flatrate, isn't it easier to just all agree to each pay 5€ a month ?

Yes, but what happens if one person uses up all the 180 hours or goes over that limit, and get's charged extra!

If everyone chipped in a tenner a month you'd have BB

(yeah I know, some fecker would grab 8 gigs of mp3s and porn in the first few days)
