Do you mean you can't make it up to 120kb/s (as in bits, therefore 15 KB/s) which would be crap or that you can't make it up to 120KB/s (as in Bytes, therefore 960kb/s) which would be absolutely great.

If it is the later, and you are getting close to 120KB/s then that is fantastic, you will never get 100% of the 1meg, due to various overheads. Most of us would kill for 120KB/s.

As for the pings, give their support a ring, it is probably just an interference problem.

it ok i got the pings sorted nothin but i dodgy nic card it seems
As far as the d/l's go

1meg is 120kb\s if my math is correct but it spikes to 91 or so but dats it nothin more so i might ring them to see if were on a 512 package instead .

1M is actually 1000kb/s or 125KB/s NOTE it is KB (uppercae) NOT kb (lowercase)

    KB stands for KiloByte
    kb stands for KiloBit
and there are 8 bits in one byte, so
    125KB * 8 = 1000kb/s or 1M

So there is a very big difference between 120KB/s and 120kb/s (which would actually be 15KB/s).

If you are getting 91KB/s to 120KB/s download, then that is great and correct. You would rarely get the full 120KB/s, it just doesn't work that way, 1M is only a theoritcal maximum, it is rarely reached. You have to remember that there is a lot of overheads and contention to deal with that will stop you from getting the full whack.

On 512 you would typically see speeds of 50KB/s (as opposed to the theoritcal maximum of 64KB/s), so if you are getting 91KB/s, then there is no way you are on the 512 package.

Must of us would gnaw our hand off to get what you have got, so don't botther the poor tech support people, they will only tell you the same.

On the other hand if you are really only getting a mx of 120kb/s (as in bits), then you do have a problem, but I think you have just gotten your bits and bytes mixed up :)

Na sorry should have clarified dat it is 120 KB\s as in 1 mb up 1 Mb down But we only spike to 90's it's never constant which is very weird usually it;s about 40 - 50 if were lucky and the contention is 8 to 1 so there should be no problem there,

    However tis all ok now

    Dr4gul4,

yea im happy but not over happy i mean lets face it ther are area's i the USA where u can get a T1 line as standard and it doesnt cost u a small fortune but u live with whats u have.

I went with ibb cos there are 3 of us in the house who use it some 4 work and others 4 web and gaming ( although it's not great 4 gaming )

im the kind of guy though who's way to greedy i mean i cant be blamed i have two OC3 connections in work (two 155 MBps ) so if im only gettin 40Kb\s at home im a bit pissed but to be honest u have to look at it like this

A . Do want to download loads of crap
    B. Do i want good pings
    C. How much do u want to pay

To be honest if it's just u and u're close to an IBB tranmitter i'd say go 4 it u cant go wrong with their prices and the service is quite good

However if ure big in to on line gaming go with esat or eircom they both seem to have very good pings

    well dats my 2 cents

I'm very happy with Irish Broadband.

    1. Downtimes are planned in advance for early hours.
    2. At Christmas time I was mailed a mobile number in case of technical problems on Christmas day. <insert warm feeling here>
    3. Their technical support are both technical and supportive.
    4. A person answers their phone, not a recording. "your call is important to us... so we've recorded a message, press 2 for support...."

20 people in the one office sharing their 1Mb connection and it's still very snappy.
Standard router is a SnapGear Lite which just works.

When u say its not great for gaming....gaming would indeed be important. Are the pings fluctuating or are they just a bit high.

I did have Eircom free trial and the pings were cracking - but they can ask me bollix with that cap.

DO NOT GET IBB IF YOU WANT TO PLAY GAMES

I cannot overstate this enough. Ask myself, Quozl, Serbian or Incubus (all gamers) how IBB is for games. How is it? Utter wánk. The pings are occasionally ok, but the majority of the time you're talking either incredibly unstable spiking or just 300-600 ping constant. Downloads are okayish though, they vary a lot aswell. You'll get nights of 20-50kb/s and nights of 3kb/s (sub-modem). Varies.

Yea the pings do spike quite a bit but i mean if ure not d/lin in n e thing the average pings are 40 - 60 on their 1 meg package but every now and then it willspike to 120 and u'll get this mental lag it's quite funny actually by then again i dint get it 4 gaming

People will probably hate me for saying it but i think that eircon are probably the best for gamers.

In theory, could you come anywhere near your dl limit given standard surfing/mail/gaming????

    No dl'n...

Couldnt agree with this more. Ive got the 512k home breeze thing and for gaming its absolutely dire. I actually havent played a decent game of coutner strike in 2 weeks. Pings were good for a while then I dont know what happened. Dl speeds are actually quite good. Consistently above 45kb/s usually hitting the 60 mark.

So if ur into online gaming dont even consider ibb but if its just for dling go 4 it.
