    Hi all,

Can anyone give a newbie BroadBand user some advice?

I have ordered IOL Broadband and would like to know:

    1. How long does it take to setup?

    2. How difficult is the self-install?

    3. The "cap" on IOL...Is that 8GB for Downloading or for both D/loading AND uploading?

    4. What kind of speeds should i expect to get on average?

    5. I use ICS on windows for my standard dial up connection to allow my other computer net access...will this continue to work with IOL BB?

Anyone who can give me some advice, i would really appreciate it

    Thanks

Easy-peasy. Pop a filter inside the box on the wall, install the CD, and away ye go.

    Downloading only afaik.

There's no reason why it shouldn't.

    Thanks for the advice..

Just going to the self install point....do you physically open the box on the wall and put in something? Would you need alot of knowledge for that kind of thing?

Install is too strong a word for the process. You just plug your phone line into the little beige box they send you out (the microfilter), and you're done. No knowledge needed at all

    As for the others....

    1. 2 - 3 weeks.

    3. The new 8gig cap is for all traffic, up and down

    4. On average, from good sources, I'd say about 50Kb/s

    5. Connection type doesn't make a difference

Takes a long time to get setup eh?

For me, 17 days. They say usually 15 days.
    2. How difficult is the self-install?
As easy as can be: put one micro-filter between each phone and each socket in your house. Turn on your computer, connect the USB modem to computer and through the microfilter with 2 sockets on one end (there is only one of these: one is for the modem, the other for any phone you have near the computer), install the drivers from the CD, double-click on Internet Explorer, or whatever browser you use and you are on broadband!
    3. The "cap" on IOL...Is that 8GB for Downloading or for both D/loading AND uploading?
That 8GB os for both downloading and uploading according to most but not all people's opinion of IOL's policy. IOL themselves have been less than clear on this matter. The consensus (for now at least) is that it is for both downloading and uploading.
    4. What kind of speeds should i expect to get on average?
45 to 55 kiloBYTES per second or 360kilobits to 440kilobits per second. Top speed (quite achievable on a regular basis): 62.5 kilobytes per second or 512 kilobits per second.
    5. I use ICS on windows for my standard dial up connection to allow my other computer net access...will this continue to work with IOL BB?
Short answer: Yes. Long(er) answer: it should and most probably will.
