youre better off doing the lotto with paddy powers, they have this cool thing where you pic your numbers, then bet as much as you want, it has different odds for however many numbers you get.

and as far as i can remember the odd for getting all 6 is something like, 10,000/1 so if you won the lotto and bet a fiver with paddy powers you'd win....a lot of money.

anywhoo the point is you chances of winning something are a lot better there even if it is only a few quid.

i had an argument with some kind of statistics student at a UCD open day about this last year (aren't i the pretentious one)

he was saying how statistics could be used to determine, or at least get an indication of future lottery numbers by looking for patterns in past results or something like that...

i really didn't agree because the previous results have absolutely no effect each time and the possiblity of a certain combination coming up is the exact same each time....

i was right, wasn't i??

you were right. each event is independent of the last etc. etc. therefore past results are irrelevant.

€50k isn't that much to win with a €5 bet for all 6 numbers. The Lotto is €1 million minimum, right?

Ah, had a luck at the Paddy Power odds. They actually give you 50000/1 and its on matching 5 out of the 6 balls. So a fiver bet would win you €250,000 which is certainly more than what you'd get for 5 balls in the lotto proper.
