European Gamecube price-drop confirmed, US sales soar

    GameCube price cut to £79
Nintendo has responded to last week's PS2 price cut by slashing £50 from the official GameCube asking price. From next Friday, October 10th, punters can expect to pay £79 for the console, with a €99 price point set to debut across the rest of Europe a week later on October 17th.

Last Wednesday, Sony officially cut the price of PS2 to £139 (and £149 for a shiny "satin silver" edition) and introduced an updated model (the SCPH-50000). Despite only slashing the cost of the console by a conservative £20, the move puts pressure on Microsoft, whose £129 Xbox is expected to tumble in price in the near future, and at the very least will be bundled aggressively in the run-up to Christmas.

On the GameCube price drop, Nintendo Europe MD of sales and marketing David Gosen said "There has never been a better time to get a GameCube and with this new price we want every household to have one."

    GameCube Sales Rocket
Nintendo today announced that sales of its GameCube have quadrupled since the system's price reduction to $99.99. The company did not provide specific sell-through data.
"Clearly, this move is what game players desired, and also what our retail partners wanted," said George Harrison, senior vice president, marketing and corporate communications, Nintendo of America. "We're already receiving requests for additional shipments of Nintendo GameCube systems between now and the holidays."

"The price cut is working great!" stated Dan DeMatteo, president, GameStop. "Our sales of Nintendo GameCube have increased more than fourfold. We are currently increasing our shipment requests for the system throughout the holidays."

im not surprised, the way the American market is reactiing, since Nintendo actually serves that market well ,as for Europe thats another story, Ive grown up with Nintendo and they have made some great games but the way they treat the europen market is not acceptable, with delays,or not even releasing some games at all, hence i find myself drawn to the Xbox or Ps2,rather than waiting and waiting till they are out on the Gamecube.Just another example of Nintendos shortsightness, and now their lead in the handheld market is coming under threat ,with Nokia, Sony, and even Microsoft are beginning to take an interest in that market.

    Thats the spirit.

GameCube North American Sales Figures Revealed
In the week following the price cut, Nintendo said it sold 61,000 consoles, up from weekly average sales of 15,000 during August and September. Nintendo's senior vice president of marketing, George Harrison, believes this figure is sustainable throughout the holiday season, and cites the introduction of over 100 new games before the end of this year as a major factor in that belief.

Hate to rain on the parade, and I love my cube and everything but did no one else notice that when the report talked about sales of the GC quadrupling, they never said what the original sales numbers were like, so we don't know how much of an improvement it really is.

Having said that if i didn't already have a cube i'd get one now and am trying to convince my mates to get one telling them that they can get the cube for €99 and rogue leader for €12.99 so there really has been no better time to buy

They announced the sales numbers shortly after, and I posted the update above; 61,000 consoles up from the average 15,000

    Interesting article in eurogamer.

I was just thinking how much it sucks that the PS2 has been 200 euros in europe for weeks but we still get stuck with the UK prices.
