Anyone using KDE 3.x know what needs to be done to get Kmix to really store default values so that they're loaded up op reboot?

What exactly is a sound server? aRts, alsa etc? What's it all about, does one have to choose one, are they completely independent...

Crossover plugin for xmms, it doesn't crossover at all, just acts like a standard output plugin... configured up the wazoo, but to no avail.

What I really wanna know is (avoid insertion of Lenny Kravisz riff at your own peril) is anyone using xmms with crossover plugin in KDE 3.x and can give me some parameters for a-changin'?

    What's with this viking smilie?

    Right,

I dont know a helluva lot about sound under linux but im about 75% sure what Im about to say is right and it might answer a few of your questions.

Depending on your sound card and the way everything is hooked up in your computer the sound card can only output sound from one source at a time (this is the simplest case, not always true) A sound server is software that takes sound from all sources and gels it together into one audio stream which goes to the sound card. this is how you can get a "BING" while playing an MP3..

I think the simplest sound server which should work with everything (this may not be the case) is the OSS driver. aRts, alsa etc provide more functionality but dont work with all chipsets (i think)

Is the crossover effect you speak of the effect to mix and fade 2 tracks as there is a transition between them. If this isnt working it may be because you're using the OSS driver.. Im having problems with this myself with nForce 2 onboards sound..

Try using alsaconf as root from a term window, usually works for me.

As with just about everything under *nix, just about everything is run as a seperate and modular service, sound is no different. As for the sound server, depending on you distro, it will be most likely to be alsa, which is way ahead of the game when compared to the others and IIRC is the only one supported by default in the 2.6 kernel series.

Installed and ran alsaconf, which told me I didn't have any usable PCI or ISA sound cards. Mine is an onboad Soundblaster. When booting linux it does start up an ALSA server though. ??
