Third Level students are vowing to take whatever action is necessary, to fight a proposed increase in college registration fees. The Union of Students says its been informed fees are set to rise to €1300 for the next academic year, an increase of 95%. It says many leaving Cert students cannot afford to go onto college, and a further increase would represent a massive financial blow. USI President Will Priestly is demanding urgent clarification from the Department of Education.

USI: 'Govt planning to double college registration fee'

    12:02 Monday September 29th 2003

The Union of Students in Ireland has claimed that the Department of Education is planning to increase college registration fees to €1,300 from next year. The USI said it had learned of the plans from a high-ranking official within the department. If true, the increase would be second massive hike in college registration fees in the first two years of the current Fianna Fail-Progressive Democrats coalition. Last year, the Government increased registration fees by 69%, from €396 to €670, as part of cutbacks and stealth taxes introduced after the general election. The move led to widespread anger among students. The USI today threatened a campaign of nationwide protests if the Government made any move to increase the fee to €1,300.

Out of interest who thinks that College fees should be brought back?
Not for everyone but for those that could afford it then as a result there would be more money to support those who have problems affording college?

    No its not!!
To get the grant ur parents have to be Farmers, builders, seperated or have their own small business,
and ur own income that isnt from the summer ohldiays comes into it to,

if people who could afford it had to pay fees there would be more money there to help the others thru college

Actually, it is. Just that the line is very low, and exceptions are made if yer from a certain background.

The thing about "those who can affod it", are that the parents don't always support them, and also, those parents who can afford it, once you add 2 more kids, they can't, and also, if both parents work, and barely make it past the margin, they are then screwed by the system, anyhowz.

To get the garnt your earning have to be under a certain amount.
Many builders make upwards of 1000 a week even more. thats refering to block layers.
Builder i'm working with at the moment makes in the reigon of 10,000 a week but hes a freakin millionare.

I know they do thats my point, when we were in college there were plenty of students there was well of families whos parents funded them thru college, and they also got the grant. The majority were farmers or builders,Not sayin all farmers and builders kids get away with it but it was something that was noticed,

Thus what I mean they should make it fairer,

    This is not true

The band is widened by the amount of kids, there are different margins for different amount of grants,

I totally disagree with all this registration fee crap though,
I reckon the governmnet will get the hint when we have a uneducated workforce or when everyone refuses to pay them

Farmer has an accountant, he buys a tractor with a loan(or other farm equipment) and claims to be broke and in debt. Kids get grant, loan paid off the following week. It's happening everywhere. My gf doesn't recieve the grant even though her and her three sisters live at home, one has a kid who also lives in the house, the other is disabled and unable to work. Her treatment costs 150euro per week. Her father is the only one that works. His wages support everyone. The sister with the child has a part time job because that is the only way to keep her son's medical card. Gf not elligable for the grant. Where is the sense in that?

Theres is none and its crap thus my point that bringing back fees mightnt be the worst thing ever,

but as for the registration fees theres no way they should go up

i dunno a whole lot about this but im on the grant.
my dad is a nurse, and i think my mum is a secretary.
wheatever way their wages work out, i think im over that line for getting the grant, when im on my own going to college.
but, my sister is going to college too, so i think that sorta brings up their spending on the two of us together and entitles us both for full grants.
another thing, i think that a lot of people are entitled for a half grant, its just that most people never really apply to get it, and never find out that they are entitled to it..... i think that if i go to college on my own for a year ( as in my sister drops out cause shes a retard ) i get a half grant...
not sure about this, please correct me.

once u apply for the grant, It depends on them which one u get awarded theres a few,
The least noe just pays ur fees but its still nice cause it means not coming up with 600 yoyo's in sept,

The bands are still ridiculous though
