Thinking about refurbishing the old house.Built about 1900 with 18" walls its always been hard to heat. Also has a low ceiling so would Ibe wise to build a cavity wall and raise the ceiling six inches. The windows are rotten . How would I tye the blocks to the wall?Am I wise at all?Was thinking about demolition but rebuilding is exhorbitant.

A circa 1900 house should have a steep roof (up to 45 degrees) and some simple ornamentation on the brickwork and / or eaves. If it is a genuine c. 1900 you should generally find the block work solid enough (do the bricks still have their regular shape or have they chipped much?). I find the 18" walls unusual for that era - have they been added to with linings at any stage? Tap on the walls to see if the is an hollowness. Depending on the echo it could be a lining or plaster that has started to come loose.

You could just apply insulation direct to the wall - possibly using a composite plaster / insulation board although this wouldn't be as good as creating an "inner" wall - an insulated lining of up to 100mm - this would loose a lot of floor space. At 18" I presume dampness isn't a problem - that is unless it is a lining there to cover up dampness.

See here http://www.gypsum.ie/ for "Gyproc Plasterboards" (see Gyproc Thermal Board and Gyproc Gypthane Board) and "Gyproc Metal Partitions, Wall Linings & Ceilings" (various).

Adding blockwork would be a **major** effort, but could be done using metal or plastic ties. The weight of the blockwork might be too much for the building

You also need to think about insulating windows, roof and floor.

BTW are you the emmmmmm from the irc.iol.ie mailing list?
