RTE: Small white box in top right-hand corner of screen

Anyone else notice the last few days that most of the programmes on RTE 1 and Network 2 have a small white box in the top right-hand corner of the picture throughout an entire programme?

It's different to the "barber-shop-pole" scrolling box that appears in the same corner before an ad on some channels (like UTV).

So what is it and what is it's purpose?

Perhaps (in relation to the total screen size) it represents the portion of licence fee dodgers in the country? When all the fees are finally collected RTE will give us the back the full picture.

I think it might be somthing to do with encoding of Teletext signals, could be wrong though.

Curious, the small white square in the top-right corner is code
which indicates that an ad break is imminent - its for cueing up
    the ads....

But of course it appears only just before the ads not all the time otherwise it would'nt be much use!

Like I said in the first post, this isn't what it is - it's there the whole time...

RTE's answer to the red dot on Sky? Only due to lack of funds they can't afford to make it interactive.... :D

at first I thought you were reffering to that stupid ID icon on N2, but that ain't on RTE1 so made no sense.

I have to say I haven't see the box at any time.

the little white box is the least of my viewing trouble. the DOG's are back on RTÉ1 and N2

afaik its for copyright purpouse so that you cant tape some programme off th tv and then sell it!

This sounds like yet another flimsy excuses bandied about by TV execs to justify using DOGS.

If that's the case how did they survive without DOGS during the last 25-odd years since the VCR was invented?

Also couldn't they display their logos for a few seconds at the start and end of the programme if copyright issues are the real reason? Note how they never fail to clear the on-screen crud for ad breaks.
