I setting up X on a laptop for the first time and I'm not sure of the configuration to use for my monitor.

How do I know which monitor type to use and how do I find out the vertical and horizonyal sync rate for my monitor????

The monitor is a 15" supporting 1024x768 max. ATI Radeon 64MB Shared card.

    XFree86 4.3 on FreeBSD 4.9PRERELEASE

Also when I do type startx with my current config it doesnt work and tells me "no screens found"

    xf86config.

    Choose the radeon driver
Also, just choose a low spec 1024x768 monitor from the list the tool gives you.

    Then tweak the config!

You can use xf86config to generate a configuration file for you, or if you prefer a graphical version you can use xf86cfg.

As for the vertical sync issue, if you're using a laptop I presume it would be an LCD screen of some sort?... it doesnt matter what is entered for the vertical and horizontal sync rates, LCD panels don't operate that way. Those monitor timing settings are only for CRT monitors, where they are VERY important :)

That 'no screens found' error is usually due to a malformed XF86config file, run either of those utilities above and they should generate a proper one. You can get drivers to allow you to use hardware acceleration with your Radeon and X Windows, but it might be Linux-only, check ati.com's drivers section.

Cheers lads got it in the end when I used XFree86 -configure.

Now comes the long and painful process of downloading the latest KDE3 :(

    hrmmm.

    cd /usr/ports
    cd kde(somewhere).

    make?

Yeah KDE is a pretty hefty download alright.

If you have a recent FreeBSD cd set you could just add it as a package. Run /stand/sysinstall as root, go to post install configuration > add packages. KDE 3 should be in there.

It might not the most up to date version though.

    3:45am mutterings ....

Yes do a stand sysinstall as opposed to a ports install.
