Why are parties allowed to field more than one of their candidates in a single constituency?

For example: In Dublin North Central, two FF candidates ran.

Wouldn't it be more fair if only one candidate from each party was allowed to run in each constituency? It would allow more parties to get a higher vote and a more even spread of TDs in Lenister House.

i suppose its kind of like "parish pump politics", people will vote for those they like, for those that will fill the potholes and so on. nobody thinks of national issues when voting. shame really.

parties put more than one candidate forward because it will increase their chances of getting one if not two or three seats.

It's our system of government. While you would certainly get more parties involved you would also see a very fractious government and put larger parties at a disadvantage. In the UK they have one candidate per party per constituency in the first past the post system.

this might be fair if there was only one MP elected from every constituency.

and perhaps at a national level there might be a good argument for this.

I think that the current system ( PR ) we have is pretty fair.

and just to correct you bloggs .. 3 FF candidates ran in North Central .

2 of them were elected and the 3rd was eliminated on the final count.
