IOLBB suddenly stops working

This might be of assistance to others -

My IOL BB connection was working fine for 2 months approx (I was running with a router).
On Monday 15th Sep. it just stopped - symptoms were no IP address or DNS addresses being obtained when attempting connection.
Switched back to the original USB modem - this also failed, looked like an authentication problem. I am on Mac OS / X and the PPPoE connection attempt was giving an error "could not negotiate a connection with the remote ppp server. please verify your settings & try again".
However, if I tried an invalid user id, it gave a different error, e.g. "authentication failed".
After over a week, my call to IOL support made its way to their second level. They recognised that this is a known problem, affecting approx 5 (five) users, where the eircom exchange seems to be invalidating the connection attempt without passing it on to the Esat BT/ IOL radius server.
They are currently working on a solution with eircom, but the temporary workaround is for them to change your user id, then you can connect ok using the new user id (unless the problem happens again).
Unfortunately I wasn't given a ticket/reference for this, but you might be able to save time if you experience this type of problem by getting the support people to recognise it and direct it to their second level.
I guess it's possible that it might affect other resellers of the eircom ADSL product too...
