Check your software update for 10.2.8 (40.6MB download)

Mac OS X: About the Mac OS X 10.2.8 Update [link]

These are some of the enhancements that are a part of the Mac OS X 10.2.8 Update:
    • Windows on external displays connected to some PowerBook computers are drawn better.
    • The Bluetooth menu bar item works better when a Bluetooth USB adapter is disconnected and reconnected.
    • Addresses a situation in which an external FireWire storage device would not become available (mount) and this message would appear: "A disk attempting to mount as 'unknown' has failed. Please use Disk Utility to check the disk."
    • Addresses an issue in which some Bluetooth devices may not be available after the computer wakes from sleep.
    • Addresses an issue in which some Bluetooth keyboards may show a delayed response when you press a key after the computer wakes from sleep.
    • Addresses an issue in which some iBook computers could make a clicking sound when using Mac OS X 10.2.5 or 10.2.6.
    • Reduces a potential delay when removing some devices from the Bluetooth pairing list.
    • Addresses a potential issue in which an audio application can unexpectedly quit when a USB- or FireWire-based audio device is disconnected.
    • Bluetooth preferences correctly displays the Bluetooth menu bar item's status if the item was enabled elsewhere.
    • Includes several enhancements for Safari.
    • Includes support for USB 2.0 devices, including PCI and PC cards for computers that do not include USB 2.0 hardware.
    • Includes several security enhancements. For detailed information, see technical document 61798, "Apple Security Updates".

Now withdrawn because of a serious number of incompatibilities, from both Software Update and apple site...

noticed last night the OS X (Installation and Setup) Disucssion board on apple.com Support had people saying it had been pulled from Software Update and Downloads...

MacCentral has a report about it here:
Apple pulls 10.2.8 update; cites Ethernet problem

Some Mac users complained that their Ethernet networking connectivity was deactivated following the software update's installation. The problem seems mainly isolated to certain Power Mac G4 models (MacCentral observed the problem directly on a Power Mac G4/500MHz configuration, for example). MacCentral received a statement from Apple late this afternoon confirming the news.

"We have temporarily removed the Mac OS X v10.2.8 software update while we resolve an issue affecting Ethernet networking on small number of Power Mac G4 desktop systems. We anticipate that the issue will be resolved soon," said the statement in its entirety

installed it Mon night and it's been working ok for me (so far!) on the iBook

OK so the Powerbook G4 is upgraded to 10.2.8 and seems to be working OK, no ethernet problems, no firewire problems, no USB problems so far. Everything copacetic.

    Didn't do the G3 yet.

BTW if anyone in here (on dialup) needs a lend of the combo 10.2.8 updater, I can burn a copy on CD. Don't think that contravenes any copyright issues.

    Just PM.

I've noticed that battery life on the Powerbook G4 Ti appears to have been HALVED by the 10.2.8 upgrade. I haven't been able to figure out if it's just the calculation being screwy or an actual decrease in performance. I've sent feedback to Apple. Hopefully this issue will be addressed by a subsequent upgrade, because the battery life is unacceptable.

well 10.2.8 it's back out again...

i'm not touching it until i hear it's not causing any hassle this time - after loading 10.2.6 back on the machine yesterday - my battery life definately took a beating and i need to use it on the move for the next while

OK so there's a patch available on Software Update which seems to cure the battery problem.

There is still something weird though, my 800MHz machine reports itself as 667MHz using a couple of techniques, and the only way to restore it to 800 is to zap the P-RAM and reset the PMU.

This hasn't been a good upgrade, and I imagine it'll put a few people off shelling out for Panther too early. I've been reading on Usenet that some folks will hang round till 10.3.1 before taking the plunge.

even after going back to 10.2.6 the battery life was still messed up - a mate said his battery life went back to normal with the second release of 10.2.8 so I held my breath and installed it last night (ok... i didn't hold it while downloading the 40+MB - but when i was restarting after the install ;)) - thankfully a big improvement

spent the day calibrating both batteries [link] and all is well again on the power front *phew*

definately not rushing out to buy Panther - there are plenty of other brave souls who will give it a shot to provide the fixes for the first update available

G4 1.2GHz - 1GB RAM. Installed the update when it was re-released after the ethernet problems were fixed. Bluetooth has improved as has Safari. But . . theres always a but . . for no reason opening applications has become erratic. Sometimes they open fine other times it could take up to 30 seconds before the menubar appears. Even opening system prefs could take up to 30 seconds. While browsing - during the page loading it will suddenly stop for up to a minute with the machine locked out until it sorts itself out !!

Is there a way to uninstall the update ??
    Anyone else ????

    Twin G4.
New 10.2.8 installed. Ethernet and everything else I've tried working ok, incl apps. Strange. The lock-up effect happened about twice then went away. (only a few secs).

after doing re-install to 10.2.6 the battery life was still flaking out - so I did the new 10.2.8 install after a mate said it had fixed his battery problems and it did the trick with my battery life too - kinda needed to clean the system anyhow so not as miffed as it got back working fine again

i gave in a bought Panther tonight - they had a event at the Apple Store on Michigan Ave so thought I'd pick it up with the current exchange rate being favourable

just began an upgrade on the laptop so lets see what it does to it!!!
