i got street fighter 2 back for mame recently and this is the first game where i thought, "heh that sidewinder game pad i have in the cupboard will come in handy.."

installed it to my computer again and went to play, noticed it didnt work atall? do joypads work in mame atall? if so then why aint mine working :(

i pressed tab to see controls and noticed a few "J button 1" etc and thought that it must surely work, but went to change a few keys and when i hit any joypad button it dosent register anyway...

    any help at all?

I had similar problems. I put it down to issues between xp and the front-end I was using.

I can't remember which front-end I got working, but I remember having lots of hassle trying to get it going once I reinstalled later.

Try a few different front ends. Maybe revert back to 98 for playing Mame?

Make sure the pad is working in Control Panel/ Gamepad it should show as working test it to make sure.

Then when in MAME32 there is an option to enable joystick support (why its not on by default i dont know).

Then when in game hit TAB and allocate buttons for GENERAL games and if you need it for SF2 make the buttons for punch kick etc:

The J1 part means its working but you have to press them to make sure.

Its annoying but you will get it working otherwise buy a Hammerhead FX only €10 in Pc world the one with the DOES not work with XP sticker ,it does work with XP :)

Personally I use a Logitech Wingman and have never had a problem with any emulator. It may be more expensive if you go with a wireless model but they seem to be very well made and able to withstand hours on SFII,Track&field tpye bashing:)

dont bother with that pad from GAME , my one just conked out after 3 months use. the direction button isnt pricise enough , meaning any sort of special moves needed for streetfighter ect , are damn near imposible to pull off.
