garbled dvd playback

i brought my dvd to my sisters and it wont work ,playback is garbled(sound is ok) ,if i change speed to 2x or 4x(fast) the picture is perfect .i think all the settings are ok and unfortunately have only 1 dvd to try it with any ideas thanks?

You connected directly to the tv or via a video recorder. If the latter it sounds like it could be macrovision (anti copying system)
