RedHat 9 Ethernet DSL Question.

    Question -

    I'm using RedHat 9.0,
an external ethernet DSL modem (D-Link DSL-300G+)
    and a SMC ethernet card.

Network card is id'ed and probed during boot.
    It's attached to the modem.
Of course it doesn't find a network - seen as how how there isn't one.

Problem comes when trying to setup the modem.
It's needs to be configed with the network card you are going to use with it.
When trying to ping the modem on 192.168.0.1 I instantly get "Network unavilable".

How do I get the network card to a position where it will see the modem during boot so that i can ping it / use the webinterface.
BTW, i'm using BASH, no room for X.

    tribble .

You should get rp_pppoe. If you're using eircom's service (which is the one I have experience of) then rp_pppoe is dead easy to set up.

Then just make a simple startup thingy in /etc/rc.d, chkconfig it and you're laughing.

    Thanks Typedef,

The DSL-300G+ is a bit of an odd modem.
It's got a built in PPPoE client,
an 100Mbit ethernet port (bit overkill for DSL),
Yet, it's fully bridged like a standard USB modem.
Most (nearly all) DSL equipment with an ethernet port is NAT'ed or semi-bridged at most.
This is precisly why I chose it 'cos I can run lots of services through it that I would have problems with otherwise (MSN, Yahoo chat among numerous others)

I think I have it solved though...
The modem requires that i'ts setup be done through a java enabled web browser (yeuck!), I'm running RH9 but no X so Konquerer(spelling?) is out.
Also - Once setup is preformed the MAC address of the net card is loaded into the modems firmware and it then refuses to talk to anything else until setup is run again. Apparently even the odd RJ-11 console interface can't get over this, though I haven't tried it on the newest firmware.

Solution - whip the net card out of the Unix box - install it into a windows box - run setup - swap the card back - and hopefully we should be go.

    I post results later.

    Get the Java plugin.

    Windows (by definition) != solution.
