Hurricane threat to Irish air routes
    From:The Irish Independent
    Wednesday, 17th September, 2003

IRISH airline chiefs were on alert last night as a potentially deadly hurricane moved closer to American airports served by their jets.

An Aer Lingus spokesman confirmed the airline was keeping a close eye on Hurricane Isabel, described as one of the most dangerous storms to bear down on the US Atlantic coast in years.

Forecasters have warned that Isabel is on course to arrive on the North Carolina coast tomorrow, but a shift in the weather could take the storm close to Baltimore, a destination served by Aer Lingus.

"If it tracks as it is supposed to at the moment, it will not affect our flights but that can obviously change. We are keeping a very close eye," the airline's spokesman said last night.

US authorities urged more than 75,000 people to evacuate the North Carolina coast as large swells and dangerous surf were reported.

The storm's maximum sustained winds were rated at 105mph, making it a Category 2 hurricane, but forecasters warned it could become more powerful "prior to landfall".

Aer Lingus flies from Shannon to Baltimore and back five times a week.
