IOL Broadband improved offering on cap

I was just on the IOL website and it seems that their service offering has changed.

I'd heard about the free installation etc, but of course it meant nothing to me, with my usual great timing of arriving just in time to miss every offer that seems to come up!! I was looking through their site trying to find out if there was an offer for current customers who couldn't avail of the Free months credit when lo and behold I found this in the FAQs:

Is there going to be a data transfer limit?
From the 1st October you will be entitled to free transfer of up to 8 Gigabytes of data in any given month. This is double the allowance on the eircom i-stream service.

If you go over this generous limit then we reserve the right to charge you for any additional data (at 3cent inc VAT per MB)

This data allowance is calculated on a daily basis and if you are consistently above this amount we reserve the right to suspend or permanently disconnect your account.

Ok so I don't agree that 8GB per month is generous, but at least it's a small step in the right direction. At the same time I would still like to get some free credit for being an original user of the service, maybe I should give them a call in the morning and see if I can wrangle anything.....

Nope, this is IOL pulling the wool over your eyes, their cap is now 8gb on TOTAL data transfer, eircom have unlimited upload but a cap on downloads. IOL are now capping total transfer both ways at 8 gb, very very sly...

8gb total transfer is still better than a 4gb d/l cap and unlimited upload
Iago can you post a link to that info?

You always could go up to 8gb, anything over that and your account is disabled until the end of the month (cap reset time).

erm, is this only for new users? or will us who have been using it for the past month or two or whatever have our limits brought up to that? i u/l nowhere near 3gigs a month, so that makes it about 7gigs a month d/l limit to me, (just random guessing!) which i wish i could get my hands on! :)

The current cap is 5gb download.. to use 8gb download would cost you an extra €90/month !!

    Great news.

Now I am VERY tempted to get IOL Broadband :)

Does this mean they will not be offering a cheap connection fee similar to the Eircom promotion, increasing the CAP insted... Or will thet offer a cheap connection price aswell as the increased cap?

Also, I hope this CAP increase isint just for a promotion and is staying :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,322 ✭✭✭Repli

Yeah Winters I heard IOL are doing the free connection + first month free too.. and for €50/month with an 8gb cap it p1sses all over eircoms adsl :)

allow 80:20 down up so your Download cap in a 31 day month will be

    6.4Gb

    206Mb a Day

The daily limit is new one. Note the wording in the IOL FAQ

"Is there going to be a data transfer limit?
From the 1st October you will be entitled to free transfer of up to 8 Gigabytes of data in any given month. This is double the allowance on the eircom i-stream service.

This data allowance is calculated on a daily basis and if you are consistently above this amount we reserve the right to suspend or permanently disconnect your account."

I would read that as a threat to anyone who regularly does over 206Mb a day through P2P for example and not really aimed at the odd outburst of ISO downloading .

"allowance is calculated on a daily basis and if you are consistently above this amount " yadda yadda yadda .

    Clarification should be sought from

    angela.keegan@esat.com

    and

    bill.murphy@yac.com

before one parts with the shekels!

It said it was calculated on a daily basis in the T&C's when I signed up too.. this was about 4 weeks ago.. And sure the last 3 days in August I downloaded ~1.5gb/day

if it was kosher they should simply say

' your aggregate usage in a given month will be calculated daily during each month and will be available for you to check on our website . It will also be available to our Billing Department '

much less threatening ......if thats what they really mean although a mention of their Billing Dept would make some people break into cold sweats :D

They are offering free connection and first months rental free. I applied for it last week and got a call from them today telling me that if I wait for them to put my order through on October 1, then I'd qualify for the free connection and free rental. So I took them up on the offer.

Ah that daily thing just means its updated daily and you can check your usage every day on the website

The prices these people charge for overages just crack me up.

So any sign of Netsource dropping their prices?

The _stated_ cap is 5gb, but you can hit 8GB before you trigger an account disabling. Trust me.

UTV don't and won't enforce their cap unless they get hammered with warez monkies. And they're doing ok so far. I know who i'd rather go with :)

Odd. If you visit the http://register.iol.ie/broadband/ page, it still gives the old details of the package. Yet by visiting the http://www.iol.ie/broadband/index.htm page you get the new and updated page with the offers. Odd that :)

It says that the free offer runs from now until December31st and the 8GB transfer limit comes into force on the 1st October. I can see myself getting it after that then :)

Though, I do shudder when they say "generous". Also this cap lark is confising me "daily basis" ... will probably give them a call tomorrow.

Let me get this straight...when the extended cap comes into effect in October, it applies to all users? Not just new ones?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,322 ✭✭✭Repli

I'd ber very surprised if it was only to new users

I'm just gonna presume it's for everyone and if they decide to charge me they can go and jump, remember though it doesn't kick in till October

Esat BT Unveils New Broadband Offer for Irish Consumers

    * Esat BT Continues to Drive Broadband Access and Take-Up With Better Value
Offer for New and Existing Customers

    Dublin, Thursday 18th September
2003: In a further bid to encourage and drive broadband take up in Ireland,
Esat BT through its ISP Ireland On-Line (www.iol.ie) today unveiled its new
    broadband offer for Irish consumers.

The offer, which is available immediately, includes free installation, free
use of a modem, free rental for the first month and a staggering 8GB
(gigabyte) data allowance per month, as well as a low monthly rental fee of
    less than €50.

Commenting on the latest offer, Bill Murphy (CEO, Esat BT) said, "In order
to bring Ireland online Esat BT has fought hard for a reduction in wholesale
connection fees in a bid to drive broadband uptake in this country and push for
a digital Ireland. Esat BT and Ireland On-Line have always lead the market in
responding to consumers' demands for lower prices and better value services.

Our latest initiative proves once again that Esat BT and Ireland On-Line are the
first to market with innovative solutions to help stimulate broadband demand in
    Ireland."

Esat BT's consumer broadband offering is called IOL Broadband and is
available for a monthly rental fee of EUR49.49. This gives consumers a 9%
saving over eircom's broadband offering at EUR 54.45.

The monthly data allowance for IOL Broadband has jumped to 8GB, which would
allow consumers to download approximately 2,600 MP3 songs per month or
watch 1,600 movie trailers per month. eircom's broadband product offers
consumers 4GB allowance per month and charges customers 3.6 cent (inc. VAT)
per minute when over the limit.

Esat BT's offer is available now and will apply to all applications
received between now and 31st December, 2003. The increased data allowance
of 8GB will come into effect on 1st October, 2003. All existing IOL
Broadband customers will also have their monthly allowances boosted to 8GB
    on 1st October 2003.

    For more information on
IOL Broadband, call 1800 923 111 or visit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 529 ✭✭✭Ebonyks

Do IOL bill you at the end of every month (calender month) or monthly from the date you connect?

I'm well over the 5Gb cap at the mo. Partly because that usage site never updated for arounded 3 days, so i was never too sure :D and partly cos i'm thick

Will the 8Gb kick in before I receive this lovely bill??

    Me too
I'm gonna ring them up later and complain
At your current rate of usage you are likely to go over your download limit in 2 days

Btw I haven't been billed at all yet and went live 28th august.. how about you? Btw the 8gb doesn't kick in until 1st october

I got connected on the 8th Sept......and things went a bit nuts from there. P2Ping etc. like a mad b@st@d.

I think with all that pressure built up from years of 56K, that DSL just sorta blew the valve right off.

Anywho....will have a chat with IOL today as well and see if i can knock some heads. I doubt it though.....

Thats something you should get ComReg to look into. I didnt think they could charge you for the whole month when you only had it for a few days of that month.

If you do find a drop i nthe evenings this would be because of eircom .. nothing else.

As Eircom have set the connection ratio for DSL at their exchanges at a high 48:1, as more people connect with DSL in your area the bandwidth open to you will drop as it is split between the 48 people on the line. It would probably jsut be your individual exchange affected. *

Damn eircom and their high connection ratio yolkie.
